Alexandra instantly turned and made for the door, but before she could reach it Philip caught hold of her hair and flung her back with inhuman strength. She hurtled across the room and rammed into the opposite wall, falling to the ground in a heap.

"Philip, Philip please." She begged while getting herself together. "Please stop this. I beg of you."

Philip gave a crooked smirk that distorted his facial features. His skin had taken on a gray tint and he no longer resembled a human, more like the dead.

Spotting a toothbrush by the sink, he snatched it up and broke of its head in a split second, then took long strides towards his victim.

His steps were slow, almost mechanical, and after a quick thought she made an attempt to ran past him. Her attempt was an utmost failure; he seized her by her neck and pulled her into his arms. His grip was strong and she had to force her way out while also forcing the hand that held the makeshift weapon away from her throat. She felt her heart racing with every second that brush inched closer to her flesh. She finally broke free but an unexpected punch to her face had her on the ground, unconscious.

Alexandra felt the sharp edge of the brush pierce her torso before she saw it. She slowly blinked open her eyes. "Philip. Why? Why? " She reached out her hand. "Why?"

"I'm sorry." He said in a raspy voice that did not indicate he being sorry at all. In the next few seconds he completely lost control as he began to slash at her. Her cries for mercy fell on deaf ears; he just went on slashing. Somewhere through it all he lost the brush and resorted to slamming her head against the hard floor. She scratched at his arms, his face with the little strength she could muster but he continued; once, twice, again and again.

After what seemed like hours she stopped squirming and lay limp underneath him. Her glazed eyes stared back at him and that was enough to break the spell.

He sat up with a jolt and observed her body, as if for the first time, then at his bloody hands and clothes, connecting the dots. A loud gasp escaped his throat and he scurried to a corner of the room.

His heart wrenched at the thought of what he had done and he run his hands through his hair. What he had done. What he had done. What the hell had he done?

...

Sophia and John were testing her patience, especially John. His comforting Sophia was all pretence, she could see through their façade. They were acting like lovers.

John tucked a strand of hair behind Sophia's ear, his fingers lingering there for a few seconds causing Cassandra to roll her eyes at the show. A while ago, she had been tearing up and causing a ruckus when she found out that her boyfriend had cheated; now here she was cuddling up with his best friend.

Sophia pursed her lips and batted her eyelids seductively and Cassandra thought that she'd finally had it. She suddenly got up, startling them. "I'm going to check up on my cousin." She announced and kicking the comforters out of her way she stomped pass them.

Sophia watched till she disappeared up the stairs before surprising John with a passionate kiss. Taking advantage of their time alone they continued with their romance, taking it an extra mile. That was until they heard a shrill cry from above.

As quickly as they could, they hurried upstairs. "Cassandra." John called out, entering the girls' room with Sophia. Cassandra stood at the entrance of the bathroom as if frozen and they joined her. What they saw was upsetting and Sophia gagged.

The floor of the small bathroom was predominantly covered in blood, drops were also splattered on the walls, bathtub and toilet. Worse still, sitting in a corner, his clothes soaked in it, sat Philip. His knees were pressed to his chest and he was visibly shaking.

"What happened?" Cassandra finally broke the silence in her best comforting voice.

"I don't know. I just blacked out for a second and I don't know what happened afterwards; when I came to, this is what I saw. I really don't know what happened. Cassie you know me, you know I could never do something like this. I would never hurt anybody, much less kill them."

"But the evidence points otherwise." Sophia whispered loudly.

"Shush." Cassandra advised. To her cousin, "We have to get you out of this mess." She gestured to John to help her and they went in, carrying Philip's tired body up. On their way out Cassandra gathered all the energy she could to not throw up at the sight of Alexandra's mashed head. She saw that John also had the same problem with the way he avoided looking in that direction.

Together they supported and helped Philip out of the bathroom. Halfway to the bedroom door they felt him stiffen.

"Philip, you alright?"

"How can he be? He just killed someone in cold blood."

"Sophia shut up." Cassandra warned. "This is not the time."

"This is all your fault."

They all turned to Philip while he repeated his words, his voice hoarse. "This is all your fault, Sophia."

"What do you mean?"

Philip wriggled out of their holds, his eyes on his girlfriend. "How long have you been cheating on me?"

His question caught her off guard and she stammered for an answer. "Wh...what are y...you t...talking a—"

"Don't make me go over this again." He rubbed his forehead in frustration. "How long have you and John been going out? How long?"

"Philip—"

"No. Don't answer. You're only going to lie to me. I can't believe this. Of all the people you could have chosen from - John - my best friend."

"And she had a good reason to."

Philip snorted in disbelief.

"He's right. You were never there for me, Philip. You were always so busy with your friends from the baseball team or those guys you met at the bar."

"Like you said, I was busy."

"No. You couldn't say no to them. I don't know why but you were always very willing whenever they called you, even when we had appointments, almost like a dog. You could never stand up to them. John on the other hand, is different. He understands me and my feelings; he cherishes me and is not afraid to place me before others. Simply put Philip, he's not a coward."

"You don't understand anything."

"You're right. I don't understand." She folded her arms. "And I don't think I ever will. Alexandra's confession opened my eyes. Philip, it's over, I'm dumping you."
