Chapter Thirty Four

"At Ellie's party? That long ago?!" Flint asked in an annoyed tone.

Eve watched him pace around the island where she had pulled up a stool. He had taken the time to put on a pair of shorts but Eve found herself in her underwear with his dress shirt over her shoulders. She decided the best place to start would be the beginning, though now she was doubting her instincts on that.

"Yes. It was just a letter. I still have it." Eve stood.

On her way through the living room, she tugged on her jeans. She returned a few minutes later holding the small, black envelope. Retaking her seat, she slid it to her mate. Flint opened it and read it a few times before raising his eyes back to Eve's.

"This has trap written all over it." Flint stated.

"No. It has your mother's hand writing all over it." She replied.

"Duncan didn't let you go, did he?" His emerald gaze hardened.

"Flint..." Eve stood.

"He did. I told him to watch you and he took you to the fucking valley where our enemies are?!" His aggression was swelling dramatically.

"Flint, I'm fine. Everything is fine. I made him take me. I'm his Luna. I used that." She explained.

"You're his Luna. I am his Alpha. His orders came from me." Flint replied.

"I would have snuck out and gone alone, if he hadn't agreed. You know me." Eve touched his arm, hoping to calm him.

"You risked your safety again. This time, you didn't even tell me. And you roped in the commander of my warriors." He pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Would you have rather I went alone?" She sighed.

"I would rather you not put yourself in danger." Flint exhaled heavily. "What happened at the diner?"

"The same rogue showed up with a tablet. Selena called me on video chat. We talked for a while." Eve spoke in a calming tone.

"What did she say?" He sat on a stool.

"She doesn't know where Bastian is but he told her he was leaving the area. She sent him on a fool's errand to prove his parents' innocence." She explained.

"Great thinking, except he's insanely unpredictable." Flint scoffed.

"I know. I told her. Either way, when he returns; she'll know before anyone. He wants to convince Selena to turn on StarLight. That's not happening." Eve stated knowingly.

"Is she coming back?" He asked as he stared at the countertop.

"Not right now." She took his hands. "She loves you. She's still on our side."

"That's just it, Eve. She isn't." Flint took a deep breath. "To get information on the Alpha power legend, I had to make an agreement with Noah."

"Noah? What could the SilverCrest Alpha want involving Selena?" Eve furrowed her brows.

"My grandfather, on her side, was the Alpha of SilverCrest for forty years. She was his only child and when she mated with my father, she moved to GreenTree. Had her mate been from her pack, she could have been their Alpha." Flint explained.

"So what does Noah want?" She probed.

"He wants her back in his pack. He says when my mother's mark was broken, she reconnected to SilverCrest. My grandfather was Noah's best friend, too. He wants to protect her." He stated.

"From StarLight?" Eve was bewildered.

"Yes." Flint nodded.

"He doesn't need to-"

"He knows. She is in his mindlink, therefore..." He sighed heavily. "She's already subject to his power."

"Okay..." She rubbed her eyes.

"What else did she have to say?" Flint asked tiredly.

"She knew I was pregnant. She could feel it in her blood. She told me her dad gave her a book with information in it on the power thing. She said she'll get it to me when she finds it." Eve answered.

"That means she didn't tell you how to reach her." He stated.

"She wasn't comfortable doing that. She already wants us to stop digging around in Star Dust Hope." She replied.

"Of course she does. Did she say anything else?" He nodded sardonically.

"I need to talk to Elijah... She wanted me to tell him something. Also, I got the name and number of a guy who might be able to get in touch with Bastian. Other than that, I think we're caught up." Eve took a drink of her water.

"Did she leave you a message for me?" Flint eventually probed.

"Yes." She spoke hesitantly. "She said to tell you everything. Also, to remind you that your mother loves you very much."

"She should try reminding me herself." He sighed and rose to his feet.

"Where are you going?" She asked.

"Come." Flint left the room without answering her question.

Eve followed him down the long corridor to the office. She plopped down on the sofa as her mate sat behind the desk. He dialed the phone and put it on speaker. After a few rings, a familiar gruff tone greeted them.

"What is it?" Elijah probed immediately.

"It's about Mom. We need to talk." Flint replied stiffly.

"Did you find her? Is she alright?" He asked hastily.

"Not exactly but we know for sure that she's alive and well. Still, we need to talk." He answered.

"I have a meeting with Clarke first but I can be there in an hour." Elijah spoke in a sure tone.

"See you then." Flint hung up the call.

"I need to get dressed." Eve stood.

"Bring me Bastian's contact's information first." He nodded.

Eve brought him her notebook and opened it to the proper page. As she left to put on some more appropriate attire, Flint dialed another number.

"Alpha." Blair greeted him.

"I'm going to give you a phone number and the name of a rogue. I need his address." Flint stated.

"Name?" She asked.

"First name, Jack. Family name is unknown." He read the small page.

"And the number?" Blair probed.

"555-655-7789. The only information I have on him says he used to live in Calgary." Flint answered.

"I'll do what I can." She nodded.

"You have until tomorrow. After that, I'm putting a specialist on it. Also, this assignment is not to be discussed with anyone. Understand?"

"Yes, Alpha." She answered before hanging up the call.

Eve entered just as her mate was hanging up the phone a third time.

"Who was it?" She pulled her hair into a ponytail.

"I called Blair to find more out about Jack. Discreetly, of course. Then Peter called to check in." Flint explained.

"The tracker you assigned to Norman. What did he say?" Eve asked curiously.

"He's emailing me Norman's associates now. Apparently he deals with rogues and half-breeds nearly exclusively." He replied.

"Progress is good." She nodded in an attempt to seem positive.

"Let's talk about something else. My father will be here soon and we'll have to jump in again." Flint walked to the stairs.

"Okay." Eve followed him to the bedroom. "So, Ellie's wedding is in a couple days."

"That much I know." He nodded as he pulled on a t-shirt.

"Well, what else is there to discuss?" She pondered aloud.

"Okay. How about why your wearing a sweatshirt inside?" Flint gestured to her clothes.

"Maybe I'm cold." Eve shrugged.

"You're a terrible liar." He pulled on a pair of jeans. "And you're in capris, So you aren't cold."

"It's nothing..." She sat on the bed.

"Eve, tell me." He stated as he felt her getting worried.

"I'm getting fat." Eve sighed and covered her face with her hands.

"You are not. I just saw you naked." Flint smirked and sat beside her.

"So did I." She grumbled.

"You aren't getting fat. You're pregnant." He touched her wrists and lowered her hands to her lap.

"I feel like a fat, bloated whale." Eve sighed.

"Well, you look like perfection." Flint stood and handed her a shirt.

"We have to announce this to the pack soon. Otherwise, my gut may give us away." She tugged the sweatshirt off and pulled the comfortable, cotton t- shirt over her head.

"Joshua has already set up a gathering in town. We only have to wait a week." He answered her.

"Good." Eve sighed.

Flint hugged her against his chest. Fear had crept back into his mind, Eve could feel it. She chose not to say anything about it. She knew that if her mate didn't want to tell her what was on his mind, there was no point in asking.

The Alpha allowed the electricity between them to sooth them both. Flint didn't care if Eve put on two hundred pounds. He didn't care if she was disobedient. He didn't even care that she was clumsy, spontaneous, and a little crazy.

No, Flint didn't care about any of these things... He just wanted Eve to be safe. And yet, this was the one assurance he didn't have. His own blood had taken it from him, just as he was getting it back.
