“Jareth”. A single utterance that sent a shiver down Jareth’s spine. 

His Adam’s apple bobbed, a reaction to the term he didn’t quite expect. 

Her tears, welling up from her crimson-rimmed eyes and rolling down her cheeks, seemed to drop into his heart, stirring ripples. 

He instantly pushed aside her previous act of leaving him behind. 

“From your sister-in-law, Evadne?” Jareth squinted his eyes, gently wiping the tear stains on her cheeks with his calloused fingers. 

Marilla nodded, her nose reddening. 

“Where did you lose it? Here?” 

She nodded again, her eyes reddened. 

“Don’t worry, I will help you.” 

Jareth took Marilla’s small hand and walked with her to the stage under everyone’s gaze. 

A trail of dreamy pink light followed, illuminating them like a masterfully painted portrait. 

Marilla shyly lowered her gaze, but couldn’t help stealing glances at him. 

Although Jareth looked a bit fierce, he was indeed handsome.

Edith kicked the bodyguard in frustration, but she lost her balance and fell to the ground, much to the amusement of her friends. 

Meanwhile, Jareth, with a mischievous smile in his eyes, announced to the crowd, “Tonight, you all seem to be having a good time. How about we play a game? My little sister here has lost her teddy bear 

As he spoke, a picture of the lost teddy bear appeared on the big screen. It was the one Marilla had taken earlier and saved on her phone. 

The crowd was abuzz with chatter. 

“Little sister? Doesn’t Jareth have a real sister, a renowned pianist? She doesn’t look like this.” 

“Little sister equals potential girlfriend, huh? And you were just calling that old man brother. Are you distant relatives?” 

“But this girl looks so young! Oh my! I hope she’s not underage!” 

“You don’t know anything. Big shots like him love shy, bookish girls!” 

Marilla heard the whispers, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. She tried to pull her hand away from Jareths, her first instinct always being to run. 

But he held her clammy hand tightly, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t break free. 

“Whoever finds the teddy bear tonight will get free drinks at Sapphire Nights Club for a year.” 

His words sent the crowd into an uproar. 

Jareth watched as Marilla’s deer-like eyes widened in surprise, a smile playing at the corners of his lips. 

“Come, let’s wait in the VIP lounge. Your bear will be found soon! 

Jareth led Marilla to another VIP room. 

The room was full of men and women drinking and laughing, all friends Jareth had made in Elmsworth. 

Seeing the unfamiliar faces and their physical contact, Marilla blushed and her face was as red as a ripe cherry. She wanted nothing more than to bury her head in the sand. 

As soon as Jareth walked in with her, the room burst into whistles and cheers. 

“Whoa, Marilla! You’re so young and you’ve already won Jareth over, impressive!”

Marilla was taker aback, her face paling. 

“Shut up, all of you. This is my sister, and I won’t tolerate any nonsense!” 

Their words kept pushing Marilla further into embarrassment, but Jareth’s protective stance was comforting. 

“So Jareth, your little sister’s teddy bear must be expensive, huh? It’s worth a year’s free drinks at the Sapphire Nights Club, that’s at least a hundred grand. All for a teddy bear? You could buy a ton of them with that money!” 

“My sister adores that teddy bear. It was a gift from my first love. It means a lot, you know? Not that you’d understand anything about sentimentality.” Jareth rolled his eyes, finding these rich brats thoroughly tiresome. 

“First love? You mean my sister-in-law?” Marilla’s eyes widened in surprise. 

“Yeah, I had a thing for your sister-in-law, Evadne was my first love, Jareth admitted with a smirk. 

He had fallen hard for Evadne and even though he was dumped in the end, he felt proud to have loved such a remarkable woman. He would etch that into his tombstone if he had to. 

But Manilla exploded, “No, no, no! You can’t have feelings for my sister-in-law! Evadne belongs to Thaddeus, and nobody can challenge that! You’re close with Thaddeus. How could you have eyes for his woman?” 

Marilla stood firm, her fists clenched, “How heartbroken would Thaddeus be if he knew you were trying to steal Evadne from him? If you take my sister-in-law away, I will never talk to you again!” 

Unable to find a better threat, Marilla said something childish and ridiculous. 

A hush fell over the room before a wave of laughter erupted. 

Marilla blushed, standing awkwardly and fiddling with the hem of her dress. 

Jareth couldn’t help but chuckle at her discomfort, but soon silenced the crowd with a stern glance. 

Just like that, everyone held their breath, not daring to mock Marilla anymore. 

“Didn’t expect you to have such a strong moral compass, Marilla.” 

Jareth leaned down, ruffling her hair with a smirk, “Those who know would think you’re standing up for Thaddeus. Those who don’t might think you’re jealous.” 

“Why would I be jealous? I don’t like anything bitter,” Marilla asked in all seriousness 

Jareth was speechless.

“Congratulations, madam, you’ve won a year’s worth of free drinks at the Sapphire Nights Club!” Lily announced, taking the teddy bear from the woman. 

The woman was ecstatic, the crowd jealous. 

Sapphire Nights Club was the most expensive club in all of Elmsworth, and to drink for free for a year? 

That was enough to make anyone’s mother weep with joy! 

Jayeth squinted his eyes, flicking his cigarette and gesturing to Lily. 

Understanding his signal, Lily loudly announced, “Thank you all for helping Marilla find her toy! Tonight’s bill is on Mr. Jareth!”
