Chapter 172

Thaddeus stood with his back to her, a smile tugging at the comers of his lips.

But he didn’t have the guts to face her for some reason.

Avery’s lips were pressed tight, a storm brewing in his eyes.

Even though Evadne and Thaddeus were divorced now and not on good terms, he still felt a complex mix of emotions between them.

“Thaddeus, spill the tea before you leave if you’re here.”

Evadne stepped forward, staring at Thaddeus’s back, “Don’t act like you’ve done something wrong. I don’t want to have nightmares.”

Thaddeus’s throat bobbed, and he tumed to face her, “It’s nothing. I just can’t sleep”.

Evadne frowned, not understanding what his insomnia had to do with her.

Was this guy blaming his insomnia on her?

That’s absurd! Why did everything have to be her fault? She hadn’t done anything wrong!

“If you can’t sleep, take a sleeping pill or count sheep. Coming here won’t solve anything.”

“It already has.” Thaddeus looked at her, “Tonight, I think I’ll sleep well.”

With that he turned and left.

Evadne watched his retreating figure until his car disappeared into the night, then she muttered, “Nutcase!”

Back in his car, Thaddeus felt exhaustion wash over him like a tide, his eyes redder than before.

He rested his arms on the steering wheel, muscles tense, breathing ragged.

As he watched Evadne and Avery go inside, his heart gave a little jolt.

Thaddeus picked up his phone with trembling fingers, dialing Gordon’s number.

“Mr. Thaddeus, what can I do for you?”

“Look into it.”

“Huh? Look into what?” Gordon was confused.

“Look into the relationship between the Ashbourne Group and the Chambers Group. Look into Evadne and Avery’s relationship.”

Thaddeus’s voice was cold, “Evadne wasn’t a woman who’s easily fooled. I don’t believe their relationship was as Avery said.”

“Alright! I’ll get right on it!”

Gordon was pleased, his voice becoming cheerful, then he cautiously added, “If only you trusted Evadne earlier, she wouldn’t have left you. All those troubles wouldn’t have occurred in front of her.”

“One more word, and you’re off to the Africa branch!” Thaddeus gritted his teeth.

Gordon quickly apologized, “I’m sorry! I know I messed up!”

Evadne had noticed Thaddeus at the gate.

She didn’t want to deal with him, and she wanted him to deal with his own mess.

But Avery had gone to see him, so she had to intervene to prevent the situation from getting worse.

The little incident didn’t ruin the party, and the dinner ended in a cheerful atmosphere.

Emeric returned to his study with Mr. Dylan, then secretly called Cas sius and Arnold.

“Dad, what did you want to talk about?” Cas s ius asked.

“How much do you know about Evadne and Mr. Avery? Tell me the truth.” Emeric asked, sitting elegantly on the sofa.

The brothers exchanged glances, and then Arnold pushed Cas sius forward, “You should ask Cas sius. I had no idea Evadne and Mr. Avery were coming together

tonight.”

Cas sius remained silent, keeping his composure.

“Cas sius, how far has their relationship progressed?” Emeric was serious, “Since when has Evadne ever accepted another man’s kindness? Tonight, Mr. Avery was overly attentive to Evadne. He almost fed her, and she didn’t refuse. Tell me, what’s their relationship now? Has Evadne really fallen for him?”

“Dad, you sound like you don’t like Mr. Avery,” Cas sius spoke his thoughts directly.

Emeric didn’t reply

“Mr. Avery and Evadne have known each other since childhood, and they’ve gotten along well since they reconnected. There aren’t many men Evadne doesn’t resist, and the Chambers family have been our friends for years. If Mr. Avery really can be with Evadne, that would be a good thing” Cas sius calmly expressed his thoughts

Tonight, Mr. Jeff came over. You both should know what he was after. He wanted to arrange a marriage between our families. Why else would he bring his two unmarried sons? He fancies Evadne

Emeric nodded, “But I absolutely won’t agree to this.”

Hearing this, the Ashbourne siblings were surprised

They didn’t expect their father to be so resistant to the Chambers family.

“Dad, do you have some beef with Mr. Jeff? Did you guys delete each other off WhatsApp?”

Amold gave his dad a thumbs up. “That’s a real tycoon for you, still able to keep up appearances even when you have issues with someone. If it were me, I’d be

livid.”

“Arnold, how the hell did you become a prosecutor? Did they let you pa** because you mentioned my name?”

Emeric glanced at Arnold irritably and said with a certain gravity, “Evadne’s my little princess. She just came out of that sh it show with the Abernathy family, there’s no way I’m sending her off into the mess that is the Chambers family! Do you think the Chambers are all sunshine and rainbows? It’s a snake pit, and everyone’s out for themselves, scheming and backstabbing. If Evadne marries into that, she’ll be caught in the crossfire, drained and suffering. Let’s not forget that Avery is Jeff’s least favonte son. He’s made it big abroad, but his early days were shady as hell. You bet there’s some dirty business on his hands. He’s probably thinking he can clean up his act by marrying into our Ashboume family and get a foothold back home, and it’s not out of the question.”

Arnold was gobsmacked, and Cas sius hung his head, biting his lip in guilt.

He just wanted his sister to start fresh, and he didn’t think about the deeper issues. It was careless.

“My daughters can lift others up, but not at the cost of their own happiness. I won’t have it!”

The fancy Bentley headed for Elmsworth.

Byron drove back in his posh car, while Jeff surprisingly invited Avery to ride with him.

The father and son sat in the back, the atmosphere heavy. There was love, but not much.

“Avery, tell me, what’s your deal with Miss Ashbourne these days?” Jeff asked, face deadpan.

“You care about my love life now?”

Avery responded a hint of a smirk on his face, “I lived with Mom abroad for 15 years, and you never asked once. Now I’m back in Elmsworth, and suddenly you’re all

interested.”

“Don’t dodge the question. I’m asking about Evadne!” Jeff’ tone was stern, his eyes filled with anger.

“Well, as you saw tonight, Evadne and I are pretty tight.” Avery’s gla**es flashed coldly, a smirk on his face.

Jeff took a deep breath, a vein on his forehead twitching. He ordered, “From now on, stay away from Evadne, keep your distance!”

“Why?” Avery asked, smiling.

“Miss Ashbourne was a match I made for Byron. You getting involved would screw up my plans!”

“Byron’s your son, aren’t I? If Evadne’s with me, she’s still your daughter-in-law. What’s the problem?”

“I’ve decided. Byron is marrying Evadne. If you want to marry into the Ashbourne family, there’s another daughter, Nydia. She was Myra’s girl, still single.”

“The unloved son only deserves the concubine’s daughter, is that it?” Avery adjusted his gla**es, a smirk on his face.

“Avery! Quit the bulls hit!”

Jeff’ eyes were red with anger, “You shouldn’t compete with Byron. You’ll get what’s coming to you, didn’t reach for what wasn’t your!”

“I’ve heard that since I was a kid, and till now, there wasn’t a single thing that truly belongs to me.”

Avery closed his eyes, a cold smile on his face, “I’m done cashing your empty checks. Tell Byron not to worry. Evadne was mine, and no one’s getting in my way.”
