His Dead Mate
Chapter 4: The Possibilities

Kasey

“Whoop! Whoop!” Kenword hollered as I showed up at the gates. “You’re first demon.”

“Nicely done dear.” Alvar smiled as she folded in her wings. “I’m proud of you.”

“She did excellently. Handled it like a pro.” Maximus said as he proudly smiled at me.

“It was too easy, though.” I huffed.

Kenword laughed. “That’s the Kasey I know. Always looking for a challenge.”

“Settle down, children,” the Big Man laughed. “I’m proud of you Kasey.”

“Really?” I asked as I looked up at the light.

He smiled at me. “I am. You will make an excellent guardian angel my child. Your parents would be proud.”

I gave Him a small smile. “I hope so.”

“Don’t doubt yourself young one. You did fantastic for your first demon.” He said softly. “Even if he was a new one. They still are very strong creatures and can’t be taken lightly. They are manipulative and you conquered that.”

“She did a wonderful job.” Alvar smiled.

“Thank you, Alvar.” I replied.

“Maximus.” God called.

“Yes Sir?” Maximus asked.

“I think Kasey is ready to go on patrol with you four.”

“R-really?” I asked shocked. “That would be awesome!”

“She’s ready.” God smiled as He walked away.

“Alright then. We leave at dawn.” Maximus smiled as he left for his room.

“Better get some sleep, Kasey.” Alvar suggested. “You’re going to need your strength. Patrol is different. You might face some stronger demons and other creatures. And sometimes we walk around in our human form so we look like regular people. But you have to be careful when you do that.”

“I will.” I said with a nod.

“Goodnight, dear.” She said as she kissed the top of my head.

“You got this kiddo.” Kenword smirked as he rubbed my head.

I playfully shoved his hand away and walked to my room.

I closed the door and changed into my human form. With a sigh, I glanced at my mirror. Sometimes I miss my old life, being able to see my family and Haley. I miss it, I certainly couldn’t deny that. But then I remember that I am an angel of God and that I’m protecting them.

Great. Now I just depressed myself.

I huffed in annoyance at myself for doing so and turned away from the mirror, getting into my bed.

Sleep is my favorite thing to do.

Zale

“Oh come on.” I growled as I continued to flip through the pages.

“Calm down boy,” Sterling laughed as he took a sip of his coffee.

Harvey frowned, looking up from his phone. “What are you even looking for anyway?”

I took off my reading glasses and looked up at them. “Anything that has to do with dead mates and then coming back to life.”

Harvey sighed. “Zale. You aren’t going to find anything like that. People don’t come back to life.”

I growled and narrowed my eyes at him. “Don’t say shit like that. It’s true.”

“I’m afraid he’s right.” Sterling said as he looked at me intently. “People don’t come back from the dead.”

“Unless they come back as zombies. Now that would be fucking wicked!” Harvey said excitedly.

Sterling and I both gave him a pointed look.

“It amazes me how you got the beta position.” I teased.

“You and me both.” Harvey laughed as he shoved his face full of pancakes.

I laughed shaking my head as I looked back down at the books. I put my reading glasses on and continued to read.

“I really don’t know what you are looking for.” Sterling said speaking up. “I don’t think you’re going to find anything.”

“I’m just looking for possibilities.” I said as I flipped the page.

“Like what?” Harvey asked through a mouthful of pancakes.

“You’re nasty.” Sterling cringed, visibly scooting away.

He has a pet peeve when people talk with their mouths full. Harvey enjoys it because he teases him about it all the time.

Currently, we sat at a diner that was on the northwest end of my pack territory, Harvey indulging in their famous six-stack of pancakes with bacon and Sterling munching on a few slices of toast and some eggs. Snyder had been pacing all morning, giving me little to no appetite. So while they indulged on my treat, I was sitting and nursing a cup of coffee while flipping through some books my dad had in his office.

“Anything I guess.” I replied to Harvey, shrugging as I skimmed the pages. “Any possible way that my mate could be alive. Do you think reincarnation is a possibility?”

Harvey and Sterling both looked at me like I was stupid.

“You have got to be joking right?” Sterling asked.

I shrugged. “It was just an idea.”

“That was the dumbest idea I have ever hear.” Sterling said as Harvey chuckled.

“Well damn.” I scoffed as I crossed it off the list.

Harvey swallowed his food as he looked down at my list. “Are you really making a list?”

I nodded. “Yup.”

“What if Elder Jonah was right.” Sterling suggested.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

He sighed. “What if your mate didn’t really come back alive or is even on this earth. What if the Moon Goddess took away your pain? Synder could easily mistake that as your mate is alive.”

“But the Moon Goddess said a miracle was going to happen.” I defended.

“Exactly. She could have been talking about you not feeling pain anymore.”

I shook my head. “I don’t believe that. I think my mate is somewhere out there. I know what I felt.”

I continued to look through the pages.

“Maybe you need a break.” Harvey said with a smile.

“What did you have in mind?” I asked.

“I don’t think I want to know.” Sterling laughed.

“Assholes.” Harvey huffed. “I was thinking we could go for a run. Let our wolves out.”

“He’s right.” Sterling said as he turned to face me. “We haven’t gone out on a run in a while. Not with us chasing rogues. I think it would be a good idea.”

I nodded with a smile. “That sounds nice. Synder likes it.”

“Sweet. Let’s go.” Harvey cheered as he threw his money on the table.

We all paid and headed out the door.

Once we got to the edge of the forest, we quickly shifted.

I sighed in content as I shook out my black fur.

‘This feels nice.’ Synder said.

I stretched out and nodded. ‘I agree.’

‘Ready?’ Harvey asked as he trotted over to Sterling and I.

‘Let’s go.’ Sterling nodded.

Harvey howled and took off into the forest. ‘Come on losers!’

‘That ass.’ Sterling growled as he ran after Harvey.

I laughed and followed suit.

‘This was actually a good idea Harvey.’ I admitted.

‘See.’ Harvey laughed. ‘I have good ideas.’

‘Eh. Not all the time.’ Sterling teased. ‘Some of them are pretty scary.’

‘I gotta agree with Sterling.’ I added. ‘Some of them you have to be stupid to go through with.’

‘I go through with them.’ Harvey defended.

‘Exactly.’ I laughed as Harvey growled at me.

‘Let’s just keep running.’ Harvey huffed as he ran faster.

‘Sounds good to me.’ I smiled as I chased him.
