Chapter 17 

I pecked out my head, looked at Frederic who was displeased, and explained in a low voice, “Sorry, I am afraid of thunder.” 

“None of my business!” Frederic never had any pity for me and directly snatched the covers back. 

Suddenly, a clap of thunder crashed in the sky. I immediately got into Frederic’s arms. We could discuss our divorce later. Now, what mattered most to me was to get through this first. 

Frederic stiffened and seemed unable to accept. 

Who could accept holding and sleeping with a bag of bones on a night of thunderstorms? I felt I was too thin. 

Frederic wrenched my arm away with a gloomy face. “Don’t touch me, okay?” 

“Then don’t snatch the covers.” I suppressed the embarrassment and bitterness inside and pretended to be calm. 

Frederic kicked the covers on me. Then, he got out of bed and took another one, intending to sleep on the floor. 

I wrapped myself up and looked at Frederic on the floor, and fantasized about how he would do after he was with Emilia in the future. If Emilia was afraid of thunder, he would hug her tightly. 

This night, I dreamt of my last life again. The despair was indelibly imprinted on my mind. 

The next day, when I woke up, Frederic had gone. 

I changed my clothes and went downstairs. Kira was making breakfast, and the other maids were cleaning up. Evie was pruning the plants that had been damaged by the rainstorm in the courtyard, and Ernie was exercising. 

“Evie, Ernie, good morning. You guys are up so early!” I walked out and greeted them. 

“We always can’t sleep for too long at this age. So, we get up and do something,” Evie said with a smile. 

I walked over and naturally took Evie’s hand, ignored her surprised eyes, and chatted with her, “Evie, I have a friend who owns a jewelry store. She got a pair of violet emerald bracelets some time ago. They are very beautiful! Recently, she was in urgent need of money. I remember that you like to collect emeralds. So, I bought them. I will go pick them up in the next two days and give them to you then.” 

Evie liked to collect emeralds very much. There was even a special collection room in their house. I intentionally catered to her pleasure to be closer to her. 

I was not doing this to make Frederic change his mind, but to make it more difficult for him to be with Emilia. 

It was just a small revenge. 

Sure enough, Evie’s eyes lit up. “Violet emerald bracelets? OK! I’ll take a look after you take them. I’ll pay you and buy them if I like them!” 

“Don’t mention this. We are a family. I’ll take them to you in the next two days,” I replied sweetly. 

I indeed had a pair of violet emerald bracelets that my mom gave me two years ago, valued at over a million. If they could make Evie like me more and be pickier about Emilia in the future, I thought it was worth it.

“Thank you, Syl. You are so nice, but I can’t just accept it,” Evie patted my hand and said kindly. 

I shook my head. “Evic, don’t say that. Frederic and I can’t be by your side and take care of you. We can only do what we can do for you. As long as you and Ernie are happy and healthy, it is worth it.” 

Evie and Ernie looked at each other. I guess they were all puzzled. Frederic and I had been married for five years, and I had never said such things. 

Ernie paused and dusted his sleeves, “Syl, thanks for your kindness. Evie and I just have no other wish but to have grandchildren. You and Frederic need to make a plan now!” 

While speaking of this matter, Evie seemed to remember something. She pulled me aside and spoke in embarrassment, “Syl, have you and Frederic been to the hospital for a checkup? That guy used to have fun before. Is there something wrong with him?” 

I was shocked. For the first time. I realized that Evie was so kind. In 

such matters, she blamed her own son first, not me, her son’s wife.
