He looks like a startled buck. The man in the trees observed Acharius. Ready for an attack.

Acharius shook his head dismissively and turned back to the pretty redhead who’d impulsively leaned into him for an embrace. He pulled her close and she tucked her face into his shoulder. Making him impulsively drop his forehead to hers. Savoring the moment.

They’re a couple to behold. Chavias’ head lowered.

Allowing Thadeus to creep closer to his neck and lean a small head against Chavias’ cheek in an effort to offer comfort.

It’d be beautiful to walk with a woman in moonlight. He felt the ache of jealousy. Waiting for them to pass below him. Skidding smoothly around the tree trunk, to step in behind them. Soundlessly treading their tracks.

Watching them walk ahead, he saw their hands twitching as they suppressed the urge to reach for each other.

Take her bloody hand! Chavias couldn’t even remember what it felt like to hold a woman’s hand.

Thadeus screeched and took to the sky. Abandoning Chavias’ shoulder.

Chavias was startled to encounter the stony face of his former friend staring through the giant leaves.
