“He attacked me and my woman. He gave me no choice.” Alazareth explained.

Savage Jack took another dram. Staring straight ahead until the innkeeper came to the counter.

Savage Jack slapped a folded missive on the counter. “Ensure the owner gets that.”

“He says ’e willna sell to ye.” The man worried his cheek.

“Never know when someone will change their mind.” Savage lifted his tankard in salute and the man hesitantly backed away with the missive.

Marked with a twining ‘SJ’. Alazareth noted. Whose that for?

“What did you devise as amends?” Savage Jack cut through the wrappings to the issue. His gaze still staring after the innkeeper thoughtfully.

“New enterprise.”

“Oh?” A blonde brow shot up as his gaze swiveled to Alazareth.

You’re intrigued. Good.

“A man called Danbury is exporting goods from the Nightway Kingdom to MidGale City.” Alazar explained.

Goods he’s stealing from Riaura and the Nightway people.

“And what business is this of mine?” Savage Jack took another drink.

I’m making it your business.

“It’s stolen goods.”

“Stolen from whom?” Savage Jack’s voice was impassive.

Utterly unreadable. Alazar found it unsettling. Do you have any emotion at all?

Other than that strange flickering of it for the Barter Queen? He does genuinely seem to like her. Alazar would give him that.

“From the villagers of both the Kingdom and NightVille.”

Savage Jack shifted, body tightening. “So, from your princess?”

You know that’s what I’m saying.

You don’t like it. I knew you wouldn’t.

“Tell me about Danbury.” His voice was hard as he took another drink.

He’s a worthless asshole.

“He’s a noble. Courting the Queen and the Princess of Nightway.”

“Both?”

“I think so.”

Savage tossed him an incredulous look. “Odd.”

Disgusting. Despicable is more apt.

“Indeed. He’s stealing from them.” Alazar added.

“What do I care for that queen?”

“You don’t. But I care for the princess, as you’re well aware. And you care for goods.”

I’m counting on your greed and industrialism.

“You want me to steal them from Danbury?” Savage Jack queried.

Absolutely.

“They’re already stolen. I just want you to deprive him of them.”

“Done.” Savage Jack stood and turned away dismissively.

Done?

“That easily?”

“Did you think it’d be difficult?” Savage Jack gave him a look over his shoulder.

Truthfully, yes.

“I thought it’d likely take some persuading.” He admitted.

“You’re not that persuasive.”

Probably not. So it was just the supplies you wanted than. Alazareth grunted.

“But I like goods. I like feeding my assassins…And the people.” He walked back to rejoin the motley crew sloshing tankards in the corner.

The people?

What people is he feeding? For the first time it occurred to Alazareth that there was much about this young man, that he didn’t know.

We need to determine who he is. Alazar decided he’d rally some of the others to do some research.

Is he on our side or Chavias’? It was growing more concerning.
