Chapter 4 Maxwell’s Grandfather 

Hearing the commotion outside, Gideon said from inside the room, “Maxwell, is that you?” 

“Yes, it’s me. Grandpa, have you gone to bed?” Maxwell’s tone became very respectful. 

“Not yet. Come on in,” replied Gideon. 

Maxwell pushed open the door, and he walked in with Camila. 

Gideon was sitting on the sofa. When he saw Maxwell and Camila holding hands as they entered, he had a relieved smile on his face. 

Posting an advertisement to help Maxwell find a wife was truly a last resort for Gideon. He had been diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer and had at most six months to live. 

He hoped to see his only grandson get married and have children while he was still alive. 

Originally, Gideon had been worried that rushing this might compromise Maxwell’s happiness. Now that he saw Camila in person, he found her even more beautiful and charming than in the photos. She looked gentle and amiable, making her a perfect match for his grandson. 

This reminded Gideon of Maxwell’s ex–girlfriend, Svetla Felton. He became worried again. 

Based on what Gideon knew about his grandson, Maxwell wouldn’t typically be attracted to a quiet, introverted girl like Camila. 

Because of Maxwell’s composed and rule–following nature, he preferred lively and outgoing girls who could bring some vitality and fun into his life, just like Svetla did in the past. 

Why did Maxwell agree to marry Camila, who had a completely opposite personality from Svetla? Gideon believed it was because Maxwell had lost his interest in finding someone he loved.

That was what Gideon worried about the most. 

“You must be Camila, right?” Gideon beckoned.

Camila walked over and politely said, “Nice to meet you, Gideon.” 

Gideon handed her a check for 80 thousand dollars “This is a gift from me. I hope you and Maxwell will respect and love each other and live happily together for the rest of your life.” 

Camila accepted the lifesaving check, feeling a sudden twinge of guilt. 

“Thank you, Grandpa,” Maxwell thanked on Camila’s behalf. 

Camila felt even more awkward and hastily said, “Thank you, Gideon. Maxwell and I will be a happy couple. You can rest assured.” 

Gideon nodded in satisfaction. Then, he looked at Maxwell. 

Maxwell knew what Gideon wanted. Gideon was asking him to make a promise too. 

But Maxwell remained silent. 

Camila looked at Maxwell and caught the struggling and hesitant look on his face. 

After a long while, Maxwell finally said, “Grandpa, don’t worry. I will take care of Ms. Lambert.” 

He used the phrase “taking care of,” instead of some more romantic words. It made his promise sound reluctant, almost like he was being forced against his will. 

Nevertheless, with Maxwell’s promise, Gideon felt a little relieved. 

Maxwell and Camila returned to their bedroom. 

Although the room was simply decorated, it had an imposing presence, with a wooden king–size bed, a bright and clean balcony, and a walk–in closet. 

The quilt on the bed was new, probably purchased not long ago, and the outer packaging hadn’t been opened yet. 

Camila liked visiting home furnishing stores and knew this brand was not cheap, costing at least 500 dollars a set. 

Was Maxwell always using such luxurious things?

While Camila was pondering, Maxwell handed her a document, on which was written “Prenuptial Agreement.” 

Camila was surprised. She took the document but didn’t know what Maxwell 

meant. 

Maxwell gestured for Camila to sit on the bed and pointed out the important points in the agreement. 

“Today, my grandpa already gave you a check for 80 thousand dollars. 

Additionally, the 80 thousand dollars I agree to lend you will be transferred to your account before this weekend. 

“Now, there’s something I need to tell you. My grandpa has been diagnosed with cancer, with at most six months to live. I want him to spend these remaining six months in happiness. So, I need you to help me.” 

Camila looked at the item pointed out by Maxwell, which read, “During the marriage, the couple does not need to fulfill conjugal duties. In public, the couple will appear as a couple deeply in love with each other and might have intimate physical contact.” 

“And this one.” Maxwell pointed to the last item. “After six months, the couple will get a divorce, and the wife can keep the bride price of 80 thousand dollars as financial compensation.” 

80 thousand for her six months? 

Camila was somewhat surprised. 

So, she would regain her freedom after six months. 

At the sight of Camila’s excited look, Maxwell pulled a long face. 

He added something to the agreement, “Before completing the divorce procedure, the wife must pay back the 80 thousand dollars she owes the husband. Otherwise, the marriage will continue to be valid until the debt is settled.” 

Was he afraid that she wouldn’t pay him back? 

Camila had to admit that Maxwell was meticulous, a typical IT guy. 

“Read the agreement carefully. If you have no objections, sign it.” Maxwell handed her a pen.

Camila flipped through the agreement. The key points were all pointed out by Maxwell, stating that pre–marital and post–marital assets belonged to each party individually. 

She had thought they would have to split the living expenses equally, but it stated in the agreement that all living expenses after marriage would be covered by the husband, and the wife would have no financial burden. 

Camila happily signed the document. 

Maxwell sighed in relief and put the agreement away. 

At that moment, Raven brought Camila’s suitcase in. She said that Gideon had hurt his back just now when standing up and asked Maxwell to check on him. 

Maxwell and Camila immediately hurried to Gideon’s room. 

They found Gideon half–sitting on the sofa, unable to move. 

“Grandpa, are you okay? I’ll call an ambulance right away,” Maxwell said nervously. 

“Wait,” Camila said. She stepped forward to gently press some spots on Gideon’s back and determined that it was only a minor sprain. 

“It’s late, so don’t call an ambulance. Let me give him a massage and apply some medicine to his back. He’ll be fine tomorrow morning.” 

Maxwell was somewhat skeptical. However, Gideon insisted on letting Camila give it a shot, so Maxwell budged. 

Camila took out some ointment and started massaging Gideon. 

After a while, Gideon’s pain was considerably eased. 

Seeing that, Maxwell breathed a sigh of relief. 

After the massage, Gideon could move again. He couldn’t stop praising Camila’s skills. 

Gideon was overjoyed and felt like he had hit a jackpot. 

“Camila, you should have a child with Maxwell as soon as possible. Once you get pregnant, I will give you this house as a gift. What do you think?” Gideon said. 

Maxwell, who was about to walk away, choked on his saliva upon hearing that.

said.

But Camila remained calm. Since they were getting a divorce after six months, she certainly wouldn’t have a child with a stranger just for a house.

“This is my salary card. You can hold onto it. All family expenses will be paid with it, including the 1,500 dollars monthly salary for our housekeeper, Raven.” 

“Your housekeeper is so expensive,” Camila said as she took the card. 

“She was introduced by my aunt. She’s capable and reliable.” 

“Does it mean I’m in charge of everything at home from now on?” 

“Of course, but you have to consult with me when it comes to important things.” 

“Can you define important things?” 

Maxwell remained silent. He hadn’t thought about what constituted an important 

thing yet. 

“Does replacing the current housekeeper with a cheaper one count as important?” Camila really thought the current housekeeper was expensive. 

“No, it doesn’t. But is a monthly salary of 1,500 dollars too much?” 

“It’s almost a third of your salary. Don’t you think it’s too much?” Camila stared at Maxwell, puzzled. 

Maxwell frowned. He really wanted to say 1,500 dollars couldn’t even buy one of his shirts. 

“If you think it’s too much, it’s up to you.” With that, Maxwell grabbed some clean clothes and went into the bathroom.
