Chapter 14 Birthday Celebration

There was only one room in the homestay. Hearing that they were a couple, the landlord greeted them passionately.

The room was somewhat humble. Maxwell didn’t want to stay here. He had never lived in such a poor room.

Camila knew that he disliked this place. She borrowed another set of bed sheets and quilt cover to change them.

Camila did all of these by herself. Maxwell just stood there and watched it. He wanted to help, but he had never done this.

Camila didn’t complain. She might use to take care of others. Both Hudson and Samson were like this. With her meticulous care, they never did any chores.

After they cleaned the room, the landlord sent them some instant food.

Seeing this junk food, Maxwell didn’t have any appetite at all.

He sat on the sofa and turned on his phone. Suddenly, he got an email from abroad for a birthday blessing.

His hands trembled.

He opened the mailbox and saw a familiar name, Svetla Felton.

Camila saw that Maxwell was just staring at the screen. She walked to him with the instant food in her hands. “What are you looking at?”

Maxwell immediately closed the mailbox.

He said, “My friend sent me a birthday message.”

Camila was surprised. “Today is your birthday?”

She looked at the instant food in her hands. She felt sorry that he had to eat these on his birthday.

Suddenly, she thought of something and walked out of the room.

The rainstorm would come, and the wind was blowing outside. There was thunder and lightning everywhere. The rain hammered the window and made people scared.

Suddenly, thunder shook the air. The power network was struck by lightning. The fishing town went pitch–black.

Maxwell who was asleep sat up from the sofa.

“Camila, where are you?”

No one responded. Maxwell stood up and wanted to find her.

Then, the door was open.

Camila walked in with a handmade cake.

There were several candles on the cake. Under the candlelight, Camila’s face was covered with a warm halo. She looked like an angel.

Camila hummed the birthday song.

“Happy birthday to you…”

Maxwell stood still on the spot.

He had not celebrated his birthday for almost 20 years. Except for his few good friends, no one knew his birthday. He didn’t want to tell others either.

“Camila, thanks for your kindness. But after my parents passed away, I didn’t celebrate my birthday,” Maxwell suppressed his mixed feelings and said coldly.

Camila stopped.

She looked at Maxwell’s sad expression and understood his emotions.

“Maxwell, I know the pain of losing your parents. But today is your birthday. If your parents can talk to you, they’ll wish you happy too. They won’t want to see you sad. Even for them, you have to be good to yourself.”

“You won’t know about my pain.”

“No, I’ve experienced this kind of sadness. When I found out that I was picked up off of beaches by my grandma, when I knew that I was abandoned by my parents, my pain was no less than yours.

“Although my parents are still alive, they never love me, both in the past and in the future. Thus, you’re luckier than me.”

Maxwell’s face changed.

“Don’t you want to find them?”

Camila shook her head.

“There are so many people in the world. How can I find them? Even if I can find them, will my happiness come back?”

“Do you hate them?”

“No. I believe that all parents love their children. They must have their reasons. So, what I can do is to live a good life.”

Camila put the cake on the table.

“I don’t know my birthday, so I never celebrate it. How about we celebrate the birthday together?

“I made this cake by myself. Do you wanna taste it?”

Maxwell walked over and looked at the cake which didn’t look good, but Camila made it herself. He felt warm in his heart.

“Let’s make wishes together.” Then, Camila started to close her eyes and make

wishes.

The room was very quiet now as if there were only two people in the world.

Looking at Camila’s delicate face, Maxwell also closed his eyes.

Camila made three wishes.

When she opened her eyes, she found that Maxwell stared at her blankly.

“Have you made wishes?”

Maxwell nodded.

“How about we exchange our wishes? I’ll text my wishes to you, and you text me.”

Then, Camila texted her three wishes to Maxwell.

But Maxwell didn’t move.

“Why don’t you start?”

“My wish can’t be fulfilled.” Maxwell’s only wish was that his grandpa could live long.

“Sometimes, a wish is not just used to be fulfilled.”

Maxwell looked up with surprise and looked into Camila’s bright eyes.

“Wish can give people the courage to live. It can make people brave and strong. We can overcome many difficulties with it.

“Even if the wishes can’t be fulfilled, we won’t regret it. Because we’ve tried our best. Actually, people are petty and tiny. We can’t decide on many things. So, don’t distress yourself. Just do what you can do.”

Maxwell didn’t expect that a young girl would know so much.

Now, he understood why his grandpa chose Camila in so many candidates.

Maybe Camila was not the best, but her experience made her suitable for Maxwell.

Camila handed the knife to Maxwell and asked him to cut the cake.

Maxwell walked to her, hugged her from behind, and held her hand. “Let’s cut it together.”

Camila’s heart beat faster.

She didn’t know if it was true. She felt as if Maxwell was the same as her. His heart beat fast, and he was a little short of breath.

Their hands which were held together trembled slightly. They couldn’t even get a whole piece of cake.

Camila didn’t know whose hand was trembling. She tried to focus on the cake. But Maxwell’s heartbeats attracted her attention.

It didn’t cost much time to cut a cake. But Camila thought it was a long time. Her palms got sweaty.

Camila ate the birthday cake for the first time. And it was made by herself.

Every time she passed the cake store, Camila would observe how the baker made the cake. The landlord’s daughter sold handmade cakes online, so they had these

materials and tools.

The cake was delicious.

Maxwell didn’t like sweet food. He just ate two small pieces of cake, but he ate all the instant food that Camila prepared for him.

The rainstorm became more violent.
