Chapter 9 We Rented This Place 

“Diego!” Helene called out, thinking it must have been him. There was no other reason for someone to hide from her. She watched the display above the elevator door signaling that it had stopped on the first floor, and she rushed back down the 

stairs. 

By the time she arrived at the first floor, he had long since disappeared. Just then, Helene received another call from the hospital. The terms of the operation had changed, and now, her grandmother’s operation would be delayed until the fees were paid in full. 

Helene hurried to the hospital again, dashing out of the Bamford Group headquarters‘ front doors. The moment she did, Carlisle picked up his phone and called reception on the first floor. Upon learning that Helene was looking for Diego, he breathed a sigh of relief and informed the confused staff at the front desk that he was fired from his position. 

Then, he called HR, telling them to inform Diego that his salary would be cut in half once again to a meager $8500 for the entire year. To reflect his reduced salary, he would be transferred to the office’s monitoring room as a network 

administrator. 

Diego was already in low spirits because his salary had been reduced so drastically earlier in the day. As he walked to the monitoring room, he was notified by someone from HR that his salary would be cut in half once again. His face was red and twisted with anger, and he nearly dropped his things and

After much deliberation, he knew he had to swallow his pride and go where he was asked. 

Meanwhile, Helene had arrived at the hospital, but she couldn’t get through to Niall. Without many options left, she went directly to the doctor’s office. From outside, she could hear him in a heated argument. 

“But the patient has already paid the deposit for the 

operation. Why can’t we schedule it and take the room?” Niall said angrily. 

“Because she hasn’t paid the full amount,” Delilah replied mercilessly. “Might I remind you that scheduling operations fall under my jurisdiction?” 

“Dr. Wilson… I didn’t expect you to be so cold–hearted.” 

“I’m a doctor, not a philanthropist. Is it so wrong that I insist we stick to the hospital’s rules? And what about you? Do you have a soft spot for one of the patient’s family members? Are you really going to bend the rules just for her?” 

“Delilah… What the hell are you talking about? You disappoint 

me.” 

Not wanting to continue this argument, he opened the door and was about to leave, but Delilah stood in the doorway. 

“Niall, can we just make things clear already? Do you have feelings for me? If you see me that way, stop torturing me like this. And if you don’t, then-”

“Delilah, I’d advise you not to bring your personal affairs into the workplace. But that being said, I may as well tell you that I already have someone I feel that way about, and it isn’t you. You and me? It’s never happening,” Niall said, his voice becoming increasingly cruel. 

“What? That isn’t… That’s impossible! Who is it?!” she demanded. 

“Get out of my way!” Niall yelled, his handsome face flush with anger. 

“No! I’m not letting this go! Why? Why don’t you see me that way? You were so kind to me! You were so good to me! Was all of it an act?!” Delilah screamed hysterically. “Is it because of that girl? The patient’s family member? You’ve only just met her! You don’t have a history with her like you do with me! We both studied abroad, and I’ve been your classmate for three years! Then, Niall flung open the door, which was slightly ajar, and stormed out. A split second later, he collided with Helene. 

Niall froze for a moment and was just about to say something when Delilah emerged from his office as well. The moment she saw Helene, her anger flared up once more. 

“You again? Why are you pestering Dr. Anderson all day? If you have the time to seduce him, why don’t you spend it raising money for the operation instead?!”

Seeing him so angry made Delilah even more enraged. She began to scream at Helene, completely ignorant of the crowd that had formed around them. 

“I’m only going to say this once, okay? Your grandmother’s operation fees haven’t been paid for, so it won’t happen!” 

“Dr. Wilson, please. Just let me explain things. I’m getting the money as quickly as I can, so please don’t cancel her operation. Please!” 

But Delilah wasn’t listening anymore. She had come to prove a point to Niall, that without her support, he wouldn’t be able to operate on his patient and save them. Helene continued to beg and plead for what seemed like ages but to no avail. 

Knowing that she wouldn’t get through to the stubborn woman, Helene knew she had to raise money to pay the rest of the fees as soon as possible. 

Helene left the hospital and returned to her apartment in search of Diego. Seeing as he wasn’t home, she squatted at the door and waited for him to eventually come back. 

She continued to wait until it got dark out. That was when she noticed an unfamiliar family of three walking past her. She watched as the woman pulled out a key and opened the door. 

Helene hurried over and asked, “Hello, I’m the owner of this apartment. How do you have the key to this house?” 

“You own this apartment?” the woman asked, taken back. “But that isn’t right. I talked to the owner yesterday. Mr.

Flores, I believe. He told me he was the owner of the house, and he even showed us the deed to the place.” 

“He showed you a property deed?” Helene asked in complete disbelief. “How is that possible?” 

“What? Maybe it was fake…? If you don’t believe me, ask my husband! He saw it too,” The woman claimed with certainty. 

“So that means… You’re renting this apartment? Is that it?” 

“That’s right. Mr. Flores told us that he was in need of money quickly, so if we could pay an entire year’s rent upfront, he would give us a discount,” the woman explained. “So we paid him just over 8000 for the place, and he gave us a contract to sign. We got the keys right after.” 

Helene could feel the heat draining from her hands and feet, and she was starting to become dizzy. To think Diego had dared to forge a deed so that he could rent out her house. 

“I’m sorry, but you can’t go inside today,” Helene said adamantly, blocking the door. Then, he took out her phone to call the police. 

But before she could, the woman’s husband stepped forward and knocked her phone out of her hand, saying, “Who the hell do you think you are? Why can’t we go inside the apartment that we rented?” 

“Because I own it.” 

“I don’t care if you claim you own this place. We rented this house from Mr. Flores, not you. If you have a problem with that, we’re not the ones you should talk to,” the man growled, pulling Helene up by the collar and throwing her aside.

Then, the family of three walked inside, locked the door, and bolted it shut. Anxious to see strangers in her apartment, Helene started to frantically knock on the door. 

“Please, you have to believe me! The man you rented from, this ‘Mr. Flores‘ guy… His deed is fake! I’m the actual owner of this apartment. If you don’t believe me, head down and ask management! They’ll tell you! My grandmother is in the hospital right now, and she’s waiting for money for an operation that could save her life. And I need to sell this house to pay for it. The doctors have already told us that she won’t even make it to the end of the month if we don’t do something,” she explained, her voice quivering in dismay. 

“Please! I know you’ve been scammed, but you can report this to the police and let them deal with it! You can’t just stay in my apartment like this! I have to pay to save my grandmother‘ s life…” 

The more Helene talked, the more hysterical she became, attracting the attention of many of the floor’s other residents. After watching her continue to beg at the door, one of the onlookers eventually called the police, saying that she was mentally unstable. 

They arrived, and Helene was taken away to a nearby police station. Once inside, she calmed down enough to cooperate. The police made a statement for her and asked her to call a family member to pick her up since they still deemed her unstable. 

In her desperation, she called Carlisle. Fortunately, he picked up quickly this time, and in less than fifteen minutes, he arrived. She didn’t think he would come so soon.

The entire time, a shadow was cast over Carlisle’s face, but a faint smirk could be seen after hearing something the other man said. At that moment, Helene noticed the family of three she had confronted earlier being escorted out of a police car. 

How strange it was that they were here too.
