Chapter 22 Dr. Anderson is Calling 

That mark must have been from when he collided with Delilah. The more he thought about it, the more disgusted he became, and he threw the shirt into the trash can as if it was garbage. 

“Buy me another shirt tomorrow,” Carlisle ordered Helene. 

“Why did you throw that one away?” 

“It’s dirty.” 

“That’s fine. You can just wash it,” Helene said stubbornly, seeming hellbent on standing against him. 

Walking over to the closet to get a set of pajamas, he replied, “Then you can give it to whoever you want to after you wash it. I don’t want it anymore.” 

“Who am I even supposed to give it to? You’re so wasteful.” 

“You like giving your clothes away, don’t you?” Carlisle turned around and suddenly caught sight of a man’s clothes hanging by the door. He walked over and his voice turned dark as he glanced at the unfamiliar garment. “Whose is this?” 

Helene’s heart nearly stopped, but she knew better than to hide. She had to tell the truth. “When Dr. Anderson sent me home, he gave me that in case it was too cold out. I was planning to give it back to him tomorrow.” 

Carlisle turned around and looked at Helene coldly,

Suddenly, Helene’s phone began to ring on the table between them. The screen lit up to show that it was Dr. Anderson. From where Carlisle was standing, he could clearly read it as well. 

The phone rang again. And it kept ringing. 

Helene didn’t think she had any choice but to pick up since it could have been something to do with her grandmother. With a disappointed look on his face, Carlisle left and slammed the door behind him. 

“Hey, is this Helene? There’s something that’s been on my mind for a while, but I didn’t know whether I should tell you. I used to see this girl. Her name was Ainsley, and you’re her spitting image. If it weren’t for the fact that you two were across the country from one another, I would’ve sworn up and down that she was your twin sister. And not only that, but you were also born the same year as her. Your exact birthday might be different, though. Anyways, I just wanted to check that with you. The birthday on the ID you gave the hospital… Is it correct?” 

Niall had said so much, but Helene didn’t process a single word. She was too distracted by Carlisle and that disappointed look. 

“Helene? Are you there?” 

“Yeah, sorry. Hey, can we talk about this tomorrow? It’s late and I’m going to bed soon.”

Niall knew it was inappropriate to talk about something like this at such an hour, but he was eager to clear this up. Perhaps Helene and his ex were related after all, and this would give him an excuse to keep talking to her for a bit. If they determined that the two weren’t, then he was determined to step away. There was no reason to keep pestering a married woman like this. 

That night, neither Helene nor Carlisle slept well. 

Helene was eventually woken up early that morning by a phone call from her company. There was supposedly a problem with one of their accounts, and she had to come in to deal with it immediately. Helene got up and walked out of the bedroom. 

Carlisle was outside looking exhausted, dark bags hanging under his eyes. 

Taking the initiative, Helene decided to greet him first. “Morning.” 

“Headed to the hospital?” Carlisle asked. 

“I have to stop by the office first. The company called me earlier asking me to deal with something urgent.” 

“I can drive you there.” 

“It’s fine. I’ll just take the bus,” Helene replied. She had been up thinking all night about the two of them, and she came to the conclusion that she didn’t want him getting too involved. It would be better for both of them if they kept a healthy distance. 

“You think my car isn’t as good as that doctor’s?” Carlisle

Suddenly, his anger deflated and he became gloomy. “But you’re willing to climb into someone else’s car and let them do it for you instead?” 

Helene was speechless, not knowing how to handle someone who would start an argument with her first thing in the 

morning. 

Seeing that Helene wouldn’t respond, Carlisle became even angrier. “Why aren’t you saying anything?” 

“Because I have nothing to say to you.” 

Helene pushed Carlisle away and walked out the door. But she had only taken a few steps before Carlisle caught up to her. He ran into her car, sped past her, and drifted right in front of her. She wouldn’t be able to ignore him now. 

Helene turned around in shock as she heard tires screeching. She watched as he opened the passenger seat door and said, 

“Get in.” 

Though surprised, she was still fed up and didn’t want to pay the man any attention. So she turned around again, only to be shocked once more. This time, he was honking his horn. How insufferable could he be? Helene was so mad that she wanted to get in just so she could throw his hands on his shoulders and shake him, asking him what he wanted with her. 

Just then, her phone rang again. It was the company urging Helene to come as soon as possible. Knowing that she

wouldn’t make it in time if she took the bus, she begrudgingly walked toward Carlisle’s car and sat inside. 

The corners of his mouth were curled into a triumphant smile 

as he drove off. 

Soon after, they arrived at Helene’s office building, and she got out of the car. As soon as she walked out, she saw Freya, who was waiting for her at the door. Freya glanced into the car, but she couldn’t recognize Carlisle due to the tinted windows and his sunglasses. 

“Helene! Isn’t this the beat–up car you usually drive to work?” she pouted. “And is that your new husband sitting inside?” 

“Just driving this piece of scrap metal… I thought he was rich!” 

“What does that have to do with you?” Helene shot back, not wanting to bother with Freya any more than she had to. 

“Someone’s in a hurry. I’m warning you, ‘kay? You’re in big trouble,” Freya informed her gleefully. “Did you take the 14 grand that Mr. Allen told you to keep in one of the company accounts? That’s a crime, you know!” 

“What are you talking about?” Helene asked, unable to process what Freya had just said. “You mean the money from 

Cashflow LTD?” 

“That’s right. Mr. Allen was in a hurry to use it this morning, but when he went to the company safe, it was gone. Only you and Mr. Allen have access to it, so if it wasn’t you, who else could it have been?” 

“That’s impossible. It was still there before I asked for all that time off,” Helene said in bewilderment as she rushed into the

As Helene walked into the company, her boss called her into his office, completely livid. Straight to the point, he 

demanded, “Helene, I need to ask you something. Where did the money from Cashflow LTD go? The $14,000?” 

“It was still in the safe when I asked for leave. My assistant can testify to that.” 

“Katy? She resigned two days ago. That being said, I called her about it as well. She had no idea, saying that you handled everything.” 

“What? That doesn’t make sense. It was in there, I swear!

and across her chest. There was this feeling she couldn’t shake telling her that this was all calculated. 

“Stop acting stupid. There are only two keys that only the two of us have access to, and I didn’t take them. That means you must have.” 

“Mr. Allen, please. I didn’t take the money. If you don’t believe me, check the surveillance feeds. You can even call the police and ask them to investigate my accounts. That will clear me of everything.” 

“Are you sure you want to go down that route? Think about it, Helene. We haven’t disclosed this to anyone in the company

Freya rolled her eyes. “If you ask me, I think it’d be better to give Helene a day to think about it. Who knows? Maybe she’ll magically ‘remember‘ where the money went and everyone will be happy.” 

He nodded in response, wanting to draw it out if he could and resolve the matter internally. Calling the police would reflect poorly on the company. And most importantly, he was afraid that Helene would die on this hill, refusing to admit it till the very end. Then, the money would be lost forever.
