Fight for Me
Nightmares

Nick’s POV

I can’t help but stare at her. She intrigues me. She’s not like any other woman I’ve ever come across.

Most women know who I am, and practically fight for my attention. They always prefer to walk around the house in their most expensive clothing and jewellery, trying to impress others with their regal taste.

It’s barely been a few days since she got here and I already feel like she consumes me. If not by the sight of her then by her scent. It’s everywhere, In my room, in my office and almost in all the hallways. I think it may have been a bad idea to have her as my personal maid. But her scent is like a drug to me now. It both frustrates and calms me and my wolf.

But I’m sure, with time the effects will fade.

She seems to be getting along quite well with other shifters, even though she’s human. I’m surprised that my members are taking such an easy liking to her as well, and so quickly too.

But the moment her smile falls at the dinner table, it makes me worried. It’s like she’s zoning out into the corner of the room, but there’s nothing. Something’s bothering her. Even when she looked at me, I could see the worry in her eyes. But that’s when she stood and left to go to her room.

“Something catch your eye?” Tyler asks next to me.

I just give him a questioning look.

“You may be a quiet guy Nicholas, but it seems something has gotten your attention lately.”

With that annoying smirk on his face, I now he saw me looking at her.

“And what of it?” I say lowly.

He chuckles. “I thought you were just trying to keep her as a mystery to us. But it seems like she’s a mystery to you too.” He sighs. “The way she's comfortable around us, it’s clear she’s lived with shifters before. This might not be her first time drifting from one pack to another.”

Ggrh. My wolf is annoyed at hearing such words and the assumptions that may come with it.

“All I’m saying is that it’s actually nice seeing such carefree and mixed interactions between our kind. It wasn’t that long ago when all supernaturals believed we could all co-habit with humans peacefully.” Tyler says.

“But that won’t happen. Humans are too weak. They will always get hurt in the crossfire of our kind.”

“And yet their species still manages to outnumber us in the millions.” Tyler laughs.

I finish the last of my dinner and head back to the office to finish up some work before I go to bed.

Later that night I get awoken by a muffled but shrieking scream. I jump from bed retracting my claws and ready for the danger.

I hear some more muffling moans and I follow it. That’s when it leads me a room not so far from mine, - her room. I don’t waste a second to go in as her soft screams continue.

Walking in, I see her huddled in a ball on the bed and the covers on the floor. She’s screaming into the pillow as she grips it. The closer I get I hear mumbles of words, and I realize she’s dreaming, having a nightmare more likely.

Whatever she’s dreaming about must clearly still be bothering her. I know because I used to have nightmares too. I just learned how to tolerate the reminder of the pain.

It’s best to not wake her up too suddenly.

As I sit on the side of her bed, I hear more mumbling as she grips the pillow so hard, her knuckles turn white.

“Don’t come near me.” She says in a soft but firm voice.

I brush her black hair out of her face to help coo her, but that’s when I see her tearing up.

“Don’t touch-“ She mumbles as she tries to move away from my hand. “Just,….kill me.”

Hearing those words make my wolf growl in my head. She’s clearly been through something terrible. To the point of demanding for death. She didn’t say those words with a scared voice, but with seriousness.

I slip my arms under her small frame and pull her into my arms. She slightly fumbles, but I hold her tightly leaning her head against my chest.

“Sshh, shh.” I say into her ear as I hold her hand on my chest. “It’s alright.”

I don’t really know what else I can say to her.

But she relaxes in my hold and grips my hand tighter.

“I missed you.” She whispers in my chest.

It was soft, but with my wolf hearing I caught it. I don’t know why, but this lump in me is growing hearing her say that. She misses someone, someone that’s obviously not me.

After a while with her still calmly sleeping in my arms, I lay her back down on the bed and cover her with the fallen blanket.
