Carol's mouth hung open, but no words cout.

The next morning, she still felt a sense of unease.

For the past two weeks, she'd been meticulous about contraception; there was no way she was going to let herself get pregnant with Felix's child.

Besides, she had been to the doctor before, who had told her that due to her frail constitution and a history of catching colds as a child, it wouldn't be easy for her to get pregnant.

After their true status had been revealed, she thought Felix would get tired of her quickly, but he beceven more insistent than before, often pushing her to her limits.

Panic started to set in. Could there have been a mistake with the contraception? That couldn't be. Felix used to wear protection himself, as he was always cautious about her not getting pregnant.

When exactly had he stopped? And why had she, Carol, started popping those pills so frequently? Sitting on her bed, she felt her anxiety grew as she thought more about it.

After throwing up last night, Felix had forbidden her from leaving the house.

She was too restless.

She pulled out her usual birth control pills, which were nearly finished. They looked identical to the ones she'd taken before, a detail Felix wasn't aware of.

She rubbed her temples, wanting to call Maja, but her phone was nowhere to be found.

After searching under the pillows and around the room, she realized that her phone was gone.

It dawned on her then-her phone had been confiscated.

She hurried downstairs to borrow a phone from one of the housekeepers, but none of them had their phones on them.

Sitting back on the couch, Carol felt her unease intensified.

That evening when Felix chome, she confronted him.

"Where did you put my phone?" Felix hung up his jacket in the foyer, and said in a nonchalant tone.

"I'm keeping it for now. You don't need to be distracted by electronics these days." Carol's eyes narrowed, and her heart felt like it had been punched.

"What do you mean?" Felix turned to her, seemingly in a good mood. "Our wedding is the day after tomorrow. I just want you to focus on the wedding without distractions." Content belongs to Św"I need to contact Maja." "You'll see her at the wedding." Carol's brow furrowed deeper as her anxiety spread.

Felix walked over, cupped her face, and kissed her forehead.

Her palms were sweaty.

That night, she thought he would torment her again, but he didn't. Instead, he just held her tightly.

Carol, trying to seek scontrol, slid her hand under his shirt but he pulled it away.

With a thought flashed through her mind, her face darkened instantly.

Felix kissed her lips gently, and said in a soft voice. "Sleep now." Carol withdrew her hand, staring coldly at the ceiling.

She was too restless to sleep.

Tossing and turning, she heard him ask, "Can't sleep?" Conversation in bed had been rare heellately, apart from his physical demands, which usually left her too exhausted to talk. Now, without the usual exertions and with him willing to chat, it felt almost alien.

She turned her back to him, but Felix pulled her into his arms, enveloping her in a warm embrace.

Throughout the day, his mood had been surprisingly buoyant, a joy swhotel.ne seeming to seep from his very bones. "If you can't sleep, want to watch a movie?" They had a projector in the room, though it was seldom used.

She closed her eyes, not in the mood to engage with him.

Felix didn't mind. He snuggled her closer, letting out a contented sigh.
