Chapter 21 

Irene’s POV 

Sitting in Noah’s car after what had happened was a whole new experience, and for once, it felt like there was finally something I could look forward to in my life. 

Noah glanced at me as he turned out of the school, his eyes heated and filled with excitement. 

“Do you want me to be your tour guide as you know the Lycan Empire?” He asked with a grin that made my breathing slow for a moment. 

I nodded because I could hardly find words to reply to him when he looked like that. 

However, Noah didn’t seem to notice as he dived into a full introduction. 

“Unlike the packs outside, the Lycan empire was created so that people like us have the freedom to live without having to worry about the humans being afraid of us or waging war against us.” 

“You have to see it like a normal city with everything that human cities have,” Noah’s brows arched in a way that made me feel like he was asking for my opinion, and I nodded. 

As I looked around, I quickly noticed that this place looked much more unappealing, unlike the route we had taken yesterday morning. 

Like the regular cities around my pack. 

“Is there like the same social classification?” I asked. While I suspected it existed before, since Luciana told me how her dad wanted to be on the council, I had expected that it was only something that was limited to status. 

Noah shrugged, “I know it’s weird to say it, considering that I’m a royal Prince and all that, but it took me a while to also understand that every place with living things needed that structure.” 

As though, like an afterthought, he added, “It’s the only way to make sure that things are easier to control and minimise chaos. 

I disagreed. “If this is a regulated society. Why is there a need for status and difference in lifestyle? Leaders can exist at most, but there’s no reason why people should live less than others.” 

I had spent all my days working for the pack while growing up. Yet, as soon as there was something to share, my name disappeared from the list. 

If there were someone nice enough, I would get some of the stuff they got for their family. In months that things were hard for people, things were harder for me as I had to live without the barest minimum things. 

Yet, there was hardly anyone who worked as hard as I did.

“Well, if you are looking at it from the perspective of those with less, it makes much more sense. However, the harsh reality isn’t like that,” Noah said as he pulled the car to a stop.

I looked around, seeing that we were in a street with smaller houses and very little spacing between them. 

“The empire has existed for more than two centuries. As for the people that are here, they have barely spent a decade in the empire. Also, their human abilities are limited, and the only reason why they are here in the first place is because they are Lycans.” 

My brows knitted together. “Do they have gifts?” 

Noah shook his head, “No, in terms of contributions, they bring nothing much to the table and are being maintained from the empire’s finances.” 

My l*ps pursed as I felt like I could understand what he was saying now. In a way, the people here were freeloaders. 

“Are they incapable, or is there just nothing for them to do?” – 

“They have regular day jobs, but they are mostly odd jobs.” 

“When I was thirteen, I thought that my brother was being unfair when I stumbled on this street and then some other ones that are only slightly better…” he paused, meeting my eyes to be sure I was listening and then started the car. 

“I’ll show you the others,” 

“Back to my story, I fought with Alek for two months, and he finally gave me the permission to give some selected people from these places a chance that I felt was fair.” 

Noah dived into a story of how he carried out an experiment because, like me, he once thought that he didn’t need such a big castle when some people had to manage houses like this. 

As he talked, we went to several other streets and towns within the Empire. 

Outside the differences in the towns and some areas, I was impressed by the overall structure of the empire. 

It was stunning. 

More importantly, the order in which things were done, there was no chaos. Even in areas that had bustling crowds, there was still some organisation to the bustle. 

Even a small pack would struggle to achieve such a feat. Seeing an empire achieve it, despite the nature of Lycans, I couldn’t help but have a lot more respect for Alek. 

How much thought and time did he have to put in for things to be this way?

positions did.” 

“Even worse, like the capable people, they didn’t focus on appreciating the opportunity and instead focused on lording their positions and authority over people.” 

My mouth fell open. That bad? 

I quickly lost my argument as Noah recounted the numerous misdeeds that most of them had done in their two years of power. 

“And the King allowed this to go on for two years?” Somehow, I didn’t dare to call him by his name out loud. 

It felt disrespectful, like some taboo. 

“I guess he wanted to indulge me. Or perhaps, like me, he also wanted to be sure that they didn’t deserve a different system from what our parents created.” 

“Anytime someone acted out of line, he would give the person the appropriate punishment for their crime and then put another person there also.” 

Noah looked sideways at me to check if I was still listening and then continued. 

“Eventually, we all got tired and moved on to other things. But every now and then, if there’s some outstanding person from down there, either from school or in their workplace, they get recommended to have better chances in the empire.” 

I beamed at his last sentence. Although, I was more surprised that the brothers were that considerate. 

“This is one of my favourite 

estaurants,” Noah said, flicking his chin outside the window. 

He parked the car as I took in the large, bubbling restaurant in front of us. 

The place was packed, probably a testament that the food was great, and considering that it was already evening and people should be home, it spoke volumes about their meal. 

Almost on cue, my stomach growled, and I flushed in embarrassment. 

However, Noah chucked awkwardly and then scratched his hair, “I’m sorry that I didn’t think to feed you the whole time.” 

“Prince Charming,” I mumbled while shooting him an eye roll. 

Before he could get it, I climbed/out of the car and squealed when he wrapped his arms around my waist without warning. 

“I’m the popular brother,” he leaned in to whisper as we walked towards the restaurant. 

Wasn’t that the more reason why he had to let me go? I didn’t want so many eyes on me while I was

trying to have a meal.

“So, I need them to know that you are mine first,” he added, and my b*dy stiffened underneath his hands while I struggled to swallow through the lump that had formed in my throat. 

At this rate, he would have my heart in less than a full moon’s time. 

Damn, all of that sweetness. 

Just like he warned, as soon as we entered the Windfall restaurant, all eyes settled on us, and many people bowed and stepped out of our way, allowing us to find a seat very quickly. 

However, until a lady walked up to us, I could feel hundreds of curious gazes on me. However, the crowd was more restrained and had fewer whispers, like in school. 

“Your Highness,” the middle–aged woman greeted me with a warm smile and then looked at me. 

“You must be the new princess to be,” she said, her smile still warm, but I didn’t miss the probing look as she took my appearance in. 

She nodded and then turned to him, “She’s a beauty to behold, Noah.” 

Noah? Were they on familiar terms? 

Noah cackled with laughter, confirming my guess, and I turned to look between them. 

“Anna used to be my nanny. She raised me when I was younger and only just moved out of the palace since I don’t need her anymore,” he explained, and I nodded in understanding. 

“I’ll bring you all our specials for today. If you come another time, you can try something else if you want a change of taste.” 

I nodded, “that’s kind of you, thank you.” 

Before long, Anna and one other girl had a full table of meals in front of us before hurrying off to attend to other people. 

Noah shot me a smile before he started scarfing down his portion, completely unabashed about everyone staring. 

At first, I couldn’t understand it, but after one bite of the apple pie in front of me, a moan fell off my l*ps from its perfection.
