Emrys felt a flutter of unease stir within him. Were it not for his familiarity with Cordelia’s character, he might have mistaken her actions for a deliberate attempt at seduction. 

Suppressing his discomfort, Emrys inquired, “Delia, can I help you?” 

“Must there be a reason for me to come talk to you? When did we become so distant?” Cordelia’s tone carried a trace of hurt as she gracefully settled beside Emrys. Her presence enveloped him, accompanied by the subtle fragrance of her hair.

She was normally aloof and composed, but today she seemed different–her facial expressions and the undertones of resentment in her voice rang with an unusual. pretentiousness. Something was definitely awry.

Noticing Emrys‘ indifference, Cordelia seemed crestfallen. “Rys, do you think I’m not good enough for you? Do you think I’m a hypocrite for pretending to be reserved in the past?” 

Emrys exclaimed in shock, “How can you think that, Delia? Why would such doubts even cross your mind?” 

His shock only deepened as he scrutinized Cordelia’s demeanor. 

Today, she seemed to defy her usual composed facade, her emotions laid bare in a raw display. The authenticity of her feelings clashed starkly with her customary poise.

Just as she reached the door, she halted abruptly, her voice tinged with a hint of resentment. “And what about Karina?” 

Emrys‘ expression faltered. 

She pressed on sorrowfully, “In truth, Caylie has already confided in me about your relationship with Karina. I couldn’t help but wonder, when were you planning to tell me?” 

A deafening silence filled the room as the weight of Cordelia’s words settled upon Emrys. 

Realization struck him like a bolt from the blue. Cordelia had been aware of his involvement with Karina all along and that the supposed cultivation obstacles he faced were non–existent. 

Ironically, he used this very excuse to reject her. In his attempt to shield her from hurt, he had inadvertently inflicted a deeper wound. Emrys‘ heart sank, for he had unwittingly conveyed to Cordelia a false impression of her significance in his heart.
