Bitten
Chapter 26

Weakness.

Weakness is seen when you back out of something worth fighting.

I take a step back that is when I realize that Wes is not with me.

“Let them go,” I whisper not wanting my emotions to show through.

My body trembles as I hear Hannah cry for one of us to help her.

Mason’s muddled moans and groans make Chris look down at him.

“You want this,” he points to Mason, “this waste of space. He’s not worth the time of day.”

The vampire next to Mason lifts his leg one more time, “Touch him and I’ll make you pay,” I take a deep calming breath, “with your life.”

“You and what army,” Chris grins at me.

“I don’t need to hide behind an army as you do. You look like a child hiding behind your men and needing to take them for your gain. If you want me, come after me.” My words register in his mind.

“Is that why you come alone? The black diamond amongst a rare species. I will strike a deal with you. Come with me and we will forget about these two.”

He pauses and looks at poor innocent Hannah.

“And if I don’t you kill them and go after me with everything you have.” I finish his statement.

“You think so little of me? Good because that is exactly what I will do. The ball is in your court.”

“Abigail, save Hannah! Take her away from here she hasn’t lived her life and I don’t want her to suffer,” Mason says through clenched teeth trying to hold back his pain.

“So newbie what will it be,” his eyes narrow for a moment then they widen a fraction, “will I ever get used to that color?”

I can feel myself losing the battle to my demon side as I call it. Everyone’s eyes are on me and I can sense movement from the corner of my eye but I do not look I stare down Chris.

“That is surreal,” the vampire closest to Chris says as his eyes take me in.

“That she is,” Chris admires me.

“Where the hell did that human go?”

Chris’s eyes dart to the ground where Mason was just a few seconds ago. Suddenly eighteen red glowing eyes shine at me and I take a step back.

Nine against one, well is going to hurt.

“You want me to kill the child don’t you,” Chris hisses at me and I can feel the imaginary lump start to form in my throat.

“No! I don’t know where Mason is. Please leave her out of this.” I look at Hannah and her little face is red from all the crying she has been doing.

Chris is staring at me and I stare back at him and without warning his body is thrown back.

He crashes hard on the ground and my eyes look for Hannah and she is nowhere to be found just like Mason.

“She’s safe,” Wes is by my side and I want to hug him my body vibrates with this unknown feeling. My fangs protrude and I know what I have to do.

“You’re dead,” my eyes lock on Chris as he gets up from the floor.

“I should have known that your lost little puppy would be here trying to save you. You don’t have to be a scientist to know that Abigail wants nothing to do with you!”

Chris smirks at Wes and I want to rip that smug look off his face.

“I’m here to help a friend and avenge another,” Wes hisses and he throws himself forward.

It all happens in a matter of seconds. Three vampires are on me. One grips my legs as another kicks me in the stomach. I did not see them coming with the vampire holding my legs does not let me regain my balance I drop to the ground hard. The third vampire jumps on top of me pinning me to the ground.

This is a lost cause and I knew that from the beginning. Dirt clings to my hair as I thrash it around trying to make some lead way but these three are not letting up. I throw my head to the side and I see Wes fighting off his horde of vampires.

“I’m sorry Wes,” I whisper and his eyes widen there is no doubt in my mind that he heard me.

I feel one of the hands of the vampire grip my throat. This is the end all I want to do is tell Hannah and Mason how much I loved them.

My heart would be tightening and my stomach would be churning with the event unfolding before me but I am a vampire none of that involves me anymore.

The vampire's grip tightens and I take an unnecessary deep breath and close my eyes.

“Get off of her!” The voice is angry as the hands-on my neck loosen up and the sound of metal colliding with concrete echoes in my ears.

Opening my eyes I see Mason standing above me with his bat. The vampires seem afraid of this lone man standing before them.

The vampire that is holding on to my leg still clings on but Mason’s distraction lets me fling him off easily. I am up on my feet in record time and by Mason's side even faster.

The sound of a cracking bone makes me look over at Wes and the vampire in front of him drops to the ground. The other vampires seem uneasy.

Chris stays back not wanting to get near us knowing well that if we are going to go after anyone it would be him.

“God damn it, Mason, what are you doing here?” I mutter under my breath and he grips the bat tighter he levels it higher as if he were to swing at a baseball.

“Backup! I’m tired of staying back and doing nothing,” his unsettling eyes wander to all the vampires around.

There is a noise that is catching everyone’s attention in the trees. I listen hard and it is footsteps but they are not like vampire footsteps. Wes appears next to us.

“Vampire hunters,” he hisses.

“Like the ones that went after me,” I look at him and he nods.

“The same,” this is not going to be good.

“What now?” I need to know the least I can do is protect Mason so he can get back to his daughter.

“We finish this now!” Wes runs at them again as the other vampires think of the same thing. They run at us.

“Stay behind me,” I yell at Mason as a vampire reaches us.

One of the vampires seems to be preoccupied with the noise in the trees that he misses me by a foot his hands closing before he reaches me. I take it to my advantage and wrap my hands around his neck and wring it until it snaps and then pull his head until it pops off like a cork in a bottle.

Mason’s eyes widen as he stares at what I just did. I throw the head to the side and see that this time two are coming towards me and I press myself close to Mason as these two elongated nails scratch at my skin.

Mason tries to swing at one of the vampires but he misses but I manage to get ahold of him and my hand shoots through him, his dense body feels like jello, and my hand grasps his heart and I pull it out. The vampire drops to his knees and clutches at his chest as the huge gaping hole in bleeds out. My hands drip in his blood and I hold it out before me as Chris stares at me mortified.

“This is going to be you,” I start at the heart in my hand and Chris shakes his head.

“You’re sadly mistaken,” that’s when two loud shots echo in the trees and I know that the vampire hunters have found us.
