Bitten
Chapter 23

Ashes to ashes.

Dust to dust.

Vincent’s body vanishes before my eyes.

I watch as my creator’s best friend leaves this place into the next.

I never hated someone so much as I hate Chris. I walk over to Vincent and all that is left is his clothes. I grab his jacket and I need something to show Wes that he is gone. I run after Mason he is walking towards the town in a daze when I reach him.

“Get away from me.” He snaps at me and takes a couple of steps away from me.

“I’m sorry, I am sorry that I am something that isn’t supposed to be real but did you think I chose this? No! I just lost a friend and all because I came to get you. I would risk everything to keep you and that beautiful daughter of yours safe. I would risk my life just to keep you two alive.”

“Just leave me alone! I need some time is that too much to ask? Go home I’ll meet you there.” I stare at him and he glares at me, “Go, Abigail!”

“I can’t do that Mason I’m sorry,” his eyes widen as his mouth opens up to say something.

“Move!” I turn around and Chris’s friend is running after me.

“I’m going to kill you both!” He hisses.

I get to Mason pushing him behind me if he wants to get to him he has to get past me first.

“Chris left. He left you for dead. You should be angry at him, not us.”

I try to distract him. He stops for a moment and looks around.

“He didn’t leave me,” his eyes glow a crimson color.

“Damn it there is no reasoning with him. Mason, you run, understand. Run and don’t stop until you get to the apartment are you ready?”

I don’t have to wait for his answer the vampire lunges at me and I shove him in the direction of town. He runs as the vampire throws me to the ground. His body pins me to the dirt and his hand clamps down on my throat.

I am not scared of not breathing even though my body is gasping for air, I don’t need it.

I am scared of him snapping my neck and then ripping my head off. He has an advantage he is bigger and much stronger than me.

“Abigail!” Its Mason’s voice.

“Damn it!” The vampire looks hungrily in the direction of Mason.

“You like to pick on girls now.”

Wes?

The vampire’s body is thrown off of me and I get up fast and look over to Mason. He has Hannah in his arms but she is fast asleep.

Wes is by my side.

The vampire looks at us and then darts into the trees.

“Wes I’m so sorry they got — ” Wes swallows me up in a hug.

“Shhh, I know Mason called me and told me.” My shoulders slump and I look over at Mason.

“Get back home we need to track him down.” Mason nods and Wes is off.

“Abigail, be careful.” He whispers and I nod at him.

“You too.” I run after Wes.

My mind is set on finding this vampire. Wes’s scent faintly registers in my mind but the vampire comes to me strong.

I follow it pushing my body to run faster. He has a head start but hopefully being a newborn gives me an advantage.

The trees start thinning until there are none and my feet pound away at the grass. I pass Wes and I can feel him trying to catch up. I can see the silhouette of the man ahead of me.

“You’re mine!”

Something within me awakens and I lose all of my worries.

The man tries to fake a left but my body is attuned to his I keep on his tail until I am close enough. I can hear the string of profanities coming out of his mouth.

“Abigail, careful.”

Wes is worried about me and at the moment he should be worried about the vampire ahead of me.

My legs loosen at the knees and I pounce on him. I grab ahold of his neck as the man tumbles to the ground he flips himself so that I land first and he follows landing harder on top of me.

He tries to pin me with his back thinking I want to get physical with him.

“You should have not laid a finger on Mason.”

He twists and turns to expose his neck.

“Now you die.”

My fangs are out and my mouth fills with venom. My hand pushes his head further to the side and I sink my fangs deep into him.

He squirms and groans but my lips don’t leave him. I suck as much blood as I can until his body goes rigid.

He’s dead.

There is no doubt about it.

Wes stays away from me and for the moment I am thankful. I push him off of me and Wes is by my side.

“Let’s make sure he stays dead.”

Wes wrings the man’s neck and then with an unnatural pop decapitates the vampire.

“Now what?” I ask him.

“Now it’s time to face our realities. You need to face the music with Mason and I have to mourn my fallen friend. Head back home and talk to him.” Easier said than done.

“I will.” I leave Wes and run back home in hopes that Mason would be there. Could I blame him if he left? Nope.
