Bitten
Chapter 20

In life, you have a lot of moments when you know you’re screwed.

That you’re in so much trouble you make yourself physically sick.

This would be that moment for me at least.

“What do we have here? A female.” The male voice is harsh and low, “why are you spying on us?”

Anger is evident in his harsh voice making me swallow the venom that has suddenly filled my mouth.

The pain on the side of my head is pulsating but I turn my head quickly and his eyes are covered by the shadow of his hood but there are two emanating red orbs shining back at me.

The sound of cloaks rustling through the air whistles in my ear and two sets of footsteps fall a bit behind them.

Great now they all know that I am here as well.

“I — ” there is no good response I can come up with, “I just ran here.”

It’s the truth and my body goes rigid waiting for him to say that I am lying or another hit to come my way.

“Did one of these two men turn you?” He asks.

He doesn’t give me a chance to answer, as his hand reaches out and grabs ahold of my shoulder lifting me off the ground with just one hand as if I were a small puppy.

“Which of you two fine gentlemen turned this girl?”

My feet dangle in the air as he shows me off like a prize to all the men before me. My eyes go to Wes and he is staring at me with terror written on his face.

“I turned her,” Wes speaks up.

“Interesting,” the man voice turns smooth like a melody, “I can sense something different about her — ”

He softly puts me down both my feet touch the ground.

I take a breath a relief, “she is a newborn isn’t she.”

“Yes, she is. She isn’t the same as you said she isn’t in a bloodlust like the rest of us.” Vincent says coming closer to us.

Wes stands behind him tense as if not sure what to do. He was not ready for me to be here and now I am in the grasp of a man that can do god knows what to me.

“From the way you ran after me when I came after her, I assumed she is one of you two’s partners, yours.” He points to Wes.

“Hell no,” I push my shoulder away from the man in the hood and turn to face his anger, my emotions overtaking me. “I am no one’s partner.”

“You have his scent all over you,” he takes a step closer to me and I fight the urge to punch him.

“Well, that’s between me and him,” I snap at him.

“And me since I was there as well,” Vincent has to put in his two cents as well.

“I swear, say another word and I will rip your head off,” I seethe at him.

Wes's eyes go wide and he shakes his head, “that is an empty threat. She has a huge dislike for my friend here.”

“More like hatred,” I emphasize.

“She is emotional like a newborn,” the man says and I turn to face him.

“Am I now? How am I supposed to be when my world was turned upside down out of nowhere and now I have to accept what I am?”

If I were human and could cry I would probably be crying out of anger and be a blubbering mess in front of all these people that I don’t know, but I am not human and I manage to put on an impassive face.

“Show me the color of your eyes.”

“They’re brown you see!” My eyes go wide emphasizing that is indeed their color.

“Your vampire eyes,” his friends close in on us and now we are surrounded by these five men.

Three against five this isn’t looking good.

“Why do you want to see them?” My voice falters as his eyes narrow, I am testing his patience.

“You either willing show me or I will make you.”

My body answers him. Adrenaline rushes through me and my shoulders drop, dropping all my fears with them.

“Make me!” The words come out and the smug smile on his face drops as well and the red orbs burn brighter.

“Stupid, stupid, oh so stupid newborn,” he mutters under his breath and the next two things that happen make me freeze in my spot.

In a blink of an eye, the other four vampires rush Wes and Vincent holding them in their spot as the leader in front of me snaps his head back and lets his hood fall back. He slowly brings back his head and his eyes lock on me. His pale skin looks like someone dead for a couple of days, unnatural. His dirty blonde hair is swept to the side and the dark mark around his eyes shows that he needs to feed and pronto.

“Dumbass old-timer, do you know who you’re messing with?”

I know exactly what I am saying but I feel confident at the moment and hopefully, I don’t regret this later.

“Abigail, he is not your normal run of the mill vampire. Run!”

Vincent shouts at me as he tries to fight his way out of the two vampires that are holding him.

Wes is pin to the ground and he is hissing and fussing but there is no way for him to break free.

“You and me, I win you let me and,” I point to Wes and Vincent, “them go and you leave us alone and if you win I’ll tell you whatever you want.”

My eyes go to them Wes is still fighting and Vincent’s body drops in defeat.

I don’t know if Vincent’s hurt or if he is disappointed that I am challenging this guy.

“Deal,” he grins at me showing me his pearly white fangs.

“Abigail, don’t be stupid run. He knows he has this in the bag.”

Wes begs me but something in me doesn’t want me to run if I run now I will always be running.

“No I’m not running,” I stare at this man in front of me.

“Before we start I need to ask you something,” he says as if it is just him and I and no one else.

“Drop dead,” I retort.

He laughs and his laughter is then followed by his friends that have Wes and Vincent.

“You’re about 200 years too late for that,” he clears his throat, “but how old are you? I mean vampire age. You’re clearly in your early twenties maybe even late teens.” His question stumps me and I stare at him blankly.

“I’m not even a year old,” I blurt out.

“Then this will be nothing for me.”

Before I can take a breath he is in my face both his hands gripping my shoulders and with an immense power shoves me like if I am a child, my body flies hitting the ground hard as my shoulder connects with the ground and my body tumbles to a stop.

“Ugh,” is all that I say as the wind is knocked out of me.

My sight goes to the man a couple of feet away and my body jolts to a stand.

“Is that all you have?” My hand brushes my sides dusting myself off.

“No that was just a warm-up,” with his vampire speed he is in my face again but this time I hold nothing back and remember what my friend Johnny said when I was being bullied in second grade.

When all else fails... headbutt them.

The man is there and my instincts take over and my head flies towards him bashing his head with mine.

The look on his face is a mixture of surprise and pain. He takes a couple of steps back.

“What was that?” He hisses at me as his hand goes to his head rubbing where mine connected.

“A headbutt, you can thank Johnny for that one.”

“Who the hell is Johnny?”

I can hear Wes say as my body runs at the man again. Once again he is caught off guard and my entire body crashes into him sending us both to the ground.

I feel triumphant for a moment but that is short-lived. I have him under me my hands pinning his shoulders to the ground. I smile over at Wes when his eyes go wide.

“Watch out,” before I can turn to look at the man he lifts his hips making my grip his shoulders weaken and instead of pinning him they are holding on to keep me balanced.

He pushes his right shoulder to the side throwing me off of him and he rolls on top of me. He places himself perfectly on me that I can move a muscle.

His thighs are on either side of my stomach, his feet are pinning my legs to the ground as his hands are pinning my elbows to the ground as well. My shoulders roll trying to loosen his grip on me but he has me cemented on the spot.

“I say that this is a win,” he grins at me.

“Abigail, do what you did earlier,” Wes shouts from the sidelines and my brain tries to decipher what he is trying to say.

My body goes limp in defeat and my head turns to face Wes and Vincent but my eyes stay locked on Wes.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper to him.

The man on top of me lowers himself close to me and I turn to face him showing him that he might have won but I am not afraid of him. His face is a couple of inches away from me and suddenly what Wes says makes sense.

My shoulders lift and close the space between us. My lips crash into his lips, they are rock hard, and I can feel his body react to my attack and his body sags. His feet release my legs and my knee-jerk reaction connects with his midsection.

He hisses against my lips and my fangs protrude and bite down hard on his bottom lip. He jumps off of me and I am up as well closing the distance between us with a step and my fist flies to his jaw. The cracking sound echoes as everyone falls silent.

The man is holding on to his family jewels as his body lurches forwards and face scrunches up. My breathing is coming in erratic as he looks at me with an agonized pain on his face.

“You’re going to pay!” He spits out. I shrug and turn to look at his comrades.

“You want an ass kick as well. Now it’s your turn to hold up your end of the deal I won now let go of my friends.” My body is not going to relax until I have them by my side.

“Let them go she won this round,” the man stands and turns to look at his friends and they release them and in no time at all Wes is by my side looking me over as if checking that I am okay.

Vincent walks over at normal speed keeping his eyes on the men before him, not trusting them.

Wes and Vincent stand on either side of me as we watch the vampire depart hastily the last one being the man that I challenged. He walks up to me and my body crouches just as Wes does the same.

The thing he does next surprises me he sticks his hand out, “you are a worthy opponent. My name is Christopher but call me Chris.”

My body straightens out but Wes stays low, ready for anything.

“Abigail and you can call me Abigail.” My hand grips his and we give a short stern shake.

The smile that plays on his lips shows me that we are good at the moment or at least that is what he wants me to think.

“I’ll be leaving see you around in a less hostile approach but I can sense it. You are going to be a force to reckon with.” He smiles and is gone.

“Come on now you will have to ‘wake up’ in a couple of hours. Head home and shower because you’re a mess,” Vincent says.

“You should have stayed away Abigail.”

“I wanted to tell you off for earlier sorry I didn’t know that I would end up fighting with some psychotic vampire.”

“Word about a female vampire wreaking havoc is going to stir up some bad attention,” Wes says wearily.

“We’ll take it as it comes,” I say as I shrug and run off to my comfy couch but with the time I am only going to be able to shower and then head off to work.

There is no rest for the wicked.
