Bitten
Chapter 12

The door creaks as the stench of rust and salt invade all my senses. Throwing the door open I scan the living room. The love seat is flip over on its side and my small table lamp is thrown across the room.

“Mason?”

I choke out as I step inside there are bloody footprints all across the floor I try to breathe through my mouth to keep myself calm but doesn’t seem to help.

“Hannah!” I shout trying to get someone to respond —from anyone.

I run to my bedroom where there are bloody handprints on the door handle. Bracing myself I pull it open not caring if I pull the door off its hinges.

“Mason, Hannah,” I say before my eyes land on a motionless Mason.

He is hunch over his head turn away from me. With all the blood my fangs start stabbing my lower lip wanting to bite him and suck whatever blood is left in him. I feel my body tremble at the sight not wanting to believe what I am seeing.

“Mason,” stepping closer to him I grab his shirt and shove him hard. His body tips overexposing Hannah underneath.

Her small body is balled up as she is laying on her side. Her face is in her knees on the ground not wanting to look at me.

“Hannah sweetie, come with me.”

Her eyes shoot open and her body stiffens at the sound of my voice.

Whoever did this to them will pay…with their lives.

Hannah slowly turns her head to look at me and the fear that leaks into them make me step back as she rolls over and tries her best to get up quickly.

“Hannah?”

She screams as fresh tears came tumbling down.

“Hannah!”

She makes it into the living room and I can hear her pitter-patter footsteps as she makes her way into the bathroom.

She’s scared of me?

I run after her. The bathroom is dark switching the light on Hannah is nowhere to be seen but her breathing tells me that she is in the hamper.

“Hannah,” I say as something in the mirror catches my attention from the corner of my eye.

I turn and freeze. In the mirror stands a girl that looks exactly like me but she couldn’t be me since I would never do that.

I couldn’t, could I?

The front side of her shirt is covered in blood. My eyes slowly move up shaking as more and more blood splatter appears as I near her fangs scraping bottom lip ready to attack once again.

She smirks back at me as her blood-red eyes stare back at me and I stay frozen in place.

She seems satisfied with what she has done that she gives me a toothy smile her teeth covered in Mason’s blood. I look away not wanting to believe my eyes and I look at my hands they are dripping with blood.

I did do it!

A scream rips through me.

“Abigail! Abigail, wake up!”

My eyes open wide gasping for air as I stare back into his dark eyes. It feels as if I was drowning and his eyes are my lifeline.

His presence makes me taking deep breaths as I stare at him. He leans over me. I am laying on the couch and it is dark all around me except for the moonlight coming through my windows.

“Mason!” my hands fly to his face and caress his cheeks making sure that it is real and not a dream.

“Abigail,” he caresses my cheek as well and I let the warmth of his hand relax me. “You were having a nightmare,” the concern on his face makes my heart flutter or at least it would have if it was still beating.

“Sorry, did I wake you?” His eyes look heavy but he smiles at me and shakes his head.

“Nah,” he chuckles as he shakes his head again, “I was getting up to go to the bathroom actually when you screamed I almost had an accident!”

My chest tightens as I hold back my laughter.

“Go before you pee yourself!”

I shove him playfully. Relief running through my body he is alive and well, it was all a bad dream.

“I already went when I saw that you were still asleep, I came back you were fighting the blankets so I decided to wake you.”

“Thanks.”

“What were you dreaming about?”

That I killed you, fed on you, and scarred your daughter for the rest of her life.

“I don’t remember,” I lied as I look away from him.

“If you don’t tell someone your nightmares there is a chance that they might come true!”

He stares at me waiting patiently. I swallow hard as I sit up as he also straights up but keeps his eyes locked on mine.

“It was nothing I swear,” giving him a small smile he nods and pulls away standing up.

“You remind me so much of,” he takes a deep breath.

Who?

“Hannah, always so stubborn but always wants to cuddle after she knows she is fine.”

“That’s cute and it’s not like I have that option.”

“Who said you didn’t?”

He walks into the bedroom and leaves the door open.

Was that an invitation?

I hear some rustling noise and then Mason whispers something but I can’t quite make out what he said when I hear little the blankets rustling, the bed squeaking, and finally, little footsteps running out of the bedroom as Hannah runs to me.

I freeze remembering my dream but she throws her body at me I catch her in the air and pull her close to me.

“Bad, bad, bad,” she closes her eyes and bobs her head a bit as she tries to snore but she makes some weird noises instead.

“Bad dream?” I ask her and she opens her eyes and nods. “I did have a bad dream but — ”

“Shh!” She caresses my cheeks, “safe, safe, safe,” she says soothingly as she rests her head on my chest, “night,” she manages to say as her mouth forms a perfect “O” and her eyes closed from the heaviness of sleep.

“Night,” I nestle her closer as I back into the couch, but Mason’s footsteps stop me when I look towards my bedroom and he is leaning against the frame with his arms cross.

“Sleep on your bed,” I shake my head, “do it for Hannah.”

Looking at her small body I might drop her if I turn or forget that she is sleeping with me. Gently getting up I walk to my bedroom as Mason walks towards the couch. He lays down and pulls the blanket over him.

“They smell like you!” He says in a whisper probably thinking I couldn’t hear him.

Is that a good thing?

My dark bedroom seems to be empty but I know better than that. The shallow breathing and quick movements make me stiffen and tighten my grip on Hannah.

“It’s just me,” Wes steps out of the darkest corner and looks drained as he moves closer. A menacing hiss erupts and it doesn’t phase him he knows that I won’t hurt him as long as he doesn’t do anything stupid. Cradling Hannah I walk over to my bed and gently set her down. Her little arms stretch in search of something giving her the pillow she nuzzles up to it and falls into a deep slumber once again.

“What do you want? I thought you were calling it quits or did I hear wrong?”

“I came to apologize, Abigail, I was an asshole and I know that the least I can do is be by your side since I forced you into this life.”

Wes stares at Hannah with no emotion on his face I stand next to her protectively.

He tries something I will kill him.

“Your apology is not accepted I rather you show me that you change rather than just tell me.”

“That’s fine I will show you,” his eyes flicker towards me and soften. I sigh.

“I need a favor!”

“Anything!”

“I’ll meet you at your ‘home’ tomorrow night when they are asleep! Now go I’m not 100 percent comfortable with you here at the moment.”

“I understand I’ll see you later.”

With a blink, he is gone and for the first time since turning into this thing, I don’t feel alone as I get into my bed and pull Hannah into me.

Her small body warming me up. Her small arms wrap around my arms as she unconsciously rubs them.

I will never hurt her as long as I am on this planet.

Kissing her soft hair and nuzzling into her I let my mind take over.

What if there’s a coven right here? Would they come after me? Mason? Innocent little Hannah? Why is it when I feel like things are looking up something comes and ruins it. Wes says he wants to make me believe he changed his mind that he’s on my side but what about Vince? I would kill him in a heartbeat if he looked at Mason or Hannah the wrong way what would he do...attack me? They are friends or at least they used to be.

Groaning I try to calm my restless mind and let my exhaustion take me under but it seems as if it can go on for days. My eyes grow heavy and I put my mind to rest.
