Chapter Twenty-Four

A twitch in his fingers. A flex of a muscle. A rotation of an ankle. He was pathetic, it had been a month and he still couldn’t move. The dwarf shifted to his side, cracking out his black wings that had lost their shine.

“Vikervash,” a female voice shouted across the room. The Fae sat on the table looked at the dwarf with curiosity.

So, he has a name, I wonder if I do too.

“Yes, my Lady,” the dwarf replied.

“When will he be ready?”

“Not for a while, he has been progressing but very slowly,” Vikervash replied as if the Fae in front of him was a science project. An experiment, that’s all that he was.

“I need you to start making more of those blades,” she said ignoring the Fae’s presence as always. He was just a ghost to them, a shimmer of what he was once.

“Has something happened to push these changes?” Vikervash asked whilst moving the Fae’s leg into a straight position, cracking his knee.

“No. Something wonderful is about to happen, but your focus must be on his recovery or else the mass production of these blades may be useless, understand?”

“Yes my Lady,” replied the dwarf.

The Fae watched the scene unfold as if it were a tale in a book. Then the Lady walked towards him. Her black nails, scraping against his pale skin. “How tired you must be,” she told him. “When all this is over, I will grant you the freedom you desperately crave. That is all I want, freedom,” she said, before taking a step away and looking back at the dwarf. “Let’s give him a moments rest before continuing his physical therapy,” she stated.

They both left the room in darkness and he sighed, quickly falling asleep. He had no dreams, for there was no version of reality other than the one he lived in every day. She spoke of freedom, but he knew deep down he would always be trapped in this cell, even once his consciousness has moved on. His body would always remain there in the frozen cell. He didn’t dream of anything because what he craved was the nothingness.
