A Day of Fallen Night (The Roots of Chaos)
A Day of Fallen Night: Part 4 – Chapter 91

Dumai woke deep in the night, to find the oil lamp burning low and Nikeya still asleep. Still in her arms, and safe.

There was so much they had yet to learn. It must reach back for centuries or more, this intrigue of the Mulberry Queen.

As for the balance, that was far older. She would have to look far and wide to understand its implications, and even then, it could take more than a lifetime.

But what she felt for this woman, who had ridden through fire to hold her again – that was as good a place as any to begin. Dumai drew her close, pressing the gentlest kiss to her shoulder.

As she drifted back off, a coldness washed over her. She tried to see into that realm of stars and running water.

I feel your fear, your pain. Like nothing I have ever felt. Her eyes closed. I see you, sister. Was it really you I met in the snow?

I opened the doors of my dream to another. The figure was so faint. Sister, be with me. I need your strength.

‘Dumai.’

Unora was at the entrance to the tent, a flicker of shock on her face. When Dumai sat up, careful not to wake Nikeya, it softened into quiet understanding.

‘You knew,’ Dumai said.

‘I always did.’ Unora was holding a candle. ‘I’m sorry, my kite. Someone has arrived.’

‘Who?’

‘Epabo. He has found you again.’ She looked gaunt. ‘He fears your sister is in danger.’
